The excitement and optimism of a fresh Formula One season has been met with a figurative splash of cold water to the face after Max Verstappen secured pole position ahead of Saturday's Bahrain Grand Prix.
Will Verstappen convert the double result win and become back-to-back Bahrain Grand Prix champion, or will someone from the rest of the grid rise to the occasion and breathe fresh air into the new Formula One season?

Bahrain Grand Prix 2024 post-qualifying picks
Max Verstappen to win (-500 at DraftKings)
Sure, nothing is interesting or surprising about picking a -500 favorite to win, but in total fairness, we had initially recommended snagging Verstappen to win at plus odds (yes, plus odds) before qualification, noting that he often opened pre-qualification in the -300 to -400 range.
But now that Verstappen has secured pole position for the third time in the last four races here, it comes as no surprise that he is heavily favored to take home the win on Saturday.
Following a historic season during which he broke the records for most wins in a season (19), highest win percentage in a season (86.4%), longest race win streak (10), and largest standings margin (+290), it should come as no shock that it took just one qualification win for Verstappen's market to return to where it was for most of last season.
Lando Norris top six finish (+100 at Caesars)
Readers of last year's race previews know that Lando Norris was a cash cow in the latter two-thirds of the season.
It wasn't just his impressive stretch of breakthrough placings that caught our eyes after finishing in the top eight in 13 of his last 14 races while podiuming in seven of those races; it was also his knack for not giving up positioning on the grid no matter where he started.
Across those final 14 races, Norris managed to maintain or improve his starting position in all but three races, with one of those failures coming as a result of retirement due to car issues. Norris will begin Sunday in the seventh position and needs to only move up one spot for this prop to cash.
More importantly, much like Verstappen's prop pre-qualification, the current pricing of this prop is severely out of sync with where he was priced in the latter third of last season, during which he would often be priced between -100 to -140 to podium in the race.
Bahrain Grand Prix 2024 pre-qualifying favorites
Max Verstappen (-360 to -300)
Who else could it be? Max Verstappen won an astonishing 19 of 22 races last year, and there was nothing that happened in the offseason that would make us believe he won't do it again. Verstappen won this race last year by almost 12 seconds — beating out teammate Sergio Perez — and books have him heavily favored to win yet again.
Charles Leclerc (+850 to +1,000)
Despite retiring last year at Bahrain International Circuit, Charles Leclerc opened up as the second favorite ahead of Perez. Leclerc never won a race in 2023, but he did finish tied for fourth in the Drivers' standings with 206 points. Ferrari and Leclerc will hope another mechanical failure doesn't end his race at Bahrain for the second year in a row.
Sergio Perez (+1,200 to +1,400)
In third place is Max's Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Perez finished second here a year ago but never really threatened victory. He also finished in second place in the Drivers' standings last season and won two of the three races that didn't go Max's way.
Odds as of February 26, 2024.

Understanding F1 betting odds
The most popular way to bet on Formula 1 odds is by simply picking the winner of a particular race. Other popular F1 betting options include which car/constructor will win and whether or not a particular race car driver will end up on the podium with a Top-3 finish.
F1 race odds usually look like this:
- Sergio Perez +1,400
This means that on a $100 bet, you'll stand to profit $1,400 if Perez wins that particular race. If one driver is especially dominant, you might see a minus sign (-) ahead of that driver's odds like this:
- Max Verstappen -120
This means that you would need to bet $120 to win $100 on Verstappen winning the race.
