Seems after that fight.. he has bitched and moaned about his hands. I think what we saw against Cotto was the best he had to offer and he's never been the same since.
I know Paulie cannot crack an egg.. but one thing for sure is he's not a quitter .. and has never been broken.
Credit to Juan Diaz he's never quit, but he has been BROKEN twice. Especially Nate because at that time HBO was touting Juan Diaz as unstoppable.. so Nate coming in at that age and giving him a beating.. was the "first" for Diaz.
I still believe Paulie should have been his second fight coming back, NOT Marquez a Technical Boxer with Power. Paulie is Technical but he would make Juan Diaz look like the OLD Juan Diaz a guy coming forward relentlessly.
Yes Paulie may have won on points but in Houston.. the decision would have went to Diaz and Diaz would have SOME confidence back. While giving a very entertaining fight.
At this time.. in their life.. I don't see why this fight is being made. Both fighters reached their peak a while ago, Paulie had his chances and didn't win, did well in some but didn't win.
Juan Diaz after being demolished by his last 2 foes, has nothing to gain except some money. Let's be realistic if Paulie had a punch, how much of a chance would Juan Diaz have? Would Juan Diaz even take this fight?
I don't see this as a crossroads fight, actually their roads are connected both headed south, guess that would mean Paulie winds up in Mexico.. with Juan Diaz :)
Juan Diaz loses he retires, which is fine he made some good money, he has plans outside of boxing. Paulie win or lose, unless he gets KO'd will still make money as a gatekeeper and is a good opponent for any boxer/puncher looking to get a few rounds in and getting a "name" under their resume.
I would say Odds would be -190 -200 range for Diaz. I'm still thinking if I would even touch this fight.. unless Vegas blows this line up.. to -300 hard to find value in either guy unless a juicy prop comes along.
The one prop which will probably trick people is the over or the distance, remember both men CUT Juan Diaz twice in a row..
Paulie also, and his hands.. so on paper it looks as if .. the over is goods as both guys don't hit hard.. but would hate to lose on a cut or stoppage due to injury.
Remember these guys are not top of the line guys and reached their peak already especially Juan Diaz, his fighting style doesn't last long even if you DO well, being he got dismantled two times in a row .. doesn't bode well for him.
Paulie has a longer shelf life, I believe technical boxers (even if they cannot crack an egg) last longer in boxing. All Paulie needs is one BIG win.., and with his mouth he can create some fights.
Not the same for Juan Diaz. He should enter law school and sue his managers for making the fight with Marquez after being destroyed by Nate Campbell, if Nate could do it easily and lay the blue print, what did they think Marquez was going to do.
