It was a sad day that will remain for his family, friends and many others. (The best to his close ones and others.)
"Russian light heavyweight boxer Roman Simakov, who collapsed in the ring Monday during a title defence, has died of brain injuries at a hospital, an official said.
The 27-year-old Simakov collapsed a minute into the seventh round after enduring a torrent of punches from Sergei Kovalev. He immediately fell into a coma from which he never emerged, said Igor Maruzov, general secretary of the Russian Boxing Federation."
Regarding the fight, watch and see at what point the fight should have been stopped previously? I don't see it, so many of the dangers of damage are already done in most cases. We see the fight and say it was at this point or that, but any fighter could have a pre-existing condition easily go unnoticeable.
Two non-boxing stories show the dangers of athletes that have conditions that are basically undetectable until it's too late (below). Now compound the fact of the body using every ounce of stamina (even until over-exertion) and taking severe brain trauma. That's why rabbit punches are illegal and lethal. A chemical called neurofilament light, which is released when damage is done to nerve cells, is around four times higher than normal in boxers after a fight.
"Thompson was playing basketball at the campus recreation center when he collapsed, and at the age of 19 he died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday evening."

"Eric "Hank" Gathers (February 11, 1967 – March 4, 1990) was an American college basketball star at Loyola Marymount University who collapsed and died during a game. He was the second player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring and rebounding in the same season."
