I might be dating my self but I used pony boxing shoes in the 80s and felt they were high quality.I don't even know if they are still in business.If you find a trainer and he's rushing you to start sparring without spending a lot of time learning proper fundamentals and conditioning get away from him.

LRM did you read the thread??  Cuz if you read it and can still come in and defend this cocky piece of s.hit, than you sir are fu.cking delusional.  He needs to learn what humility is and hes not garbage for a fighter.  And Im not hiding behind sh.it guy,  I've been around the sport my entire life and I've sparred with much better pros than this guy.   But you keep defending this moron.

Again ...... The original post was asking for advice from ANYONE WHO HAS ACTUALLY BOXED.....

 

I gave my opinion ... as we all know now, I am a very accomplished Amateur Fighter and I had 1 Pro Fight and I got K.O and havent had another fight ,,,, I have a boxing gym where I train boxers and I help people get in shape...

 

Thus I believe I am qualified ENOUGH to chime in ...... HERE COMES WALKY " ohhh dont listen to anyone on this Forum they dont know shit..... BUT YET HE WENT ON TO GIVE ADVICE...... I defended myself and let everyone know WHY i felt i could give advice .... Im not a NOBODY like Walky said and I have some experience in Boxing ......

Walky is a tub of lard... he boxed amateur and never went PRO.. he had to get a real job according to him... he was no good , no one saw any talent in Walky NONE ... he claimed to have played College Football but no one knows WHERE WHEN OR FOR WHOM...... Basically Walky has done it ALL but since no one knows who he is or what hes actually done, hes done nothing in my book.... Walky is a keyboard boxer and keyboard football player.... Walky as i have said in the past I AM 100% sure I WOULD WHOOP YOUR ASS ..... IM VERYYY CONFIDENT ABOUT THAT.

Royboy put his money where his mouth is. He gave his credentials. You can't refute him because you "boxed as a kid and played college football" and not even substantiate your story.
p.s. I boxed a little as a youth and young adult and my trainer almost never had me lift weights. Made me run a schit ton. That's my 2cents of advice, start running.

All professional boxers do some sort of weight training though.  Those who dont are a step or 2 behind.  Of course it should not be a priority, like any other sport, sport specific training should be the primary workout.  People who say dont lift weights, are really back in the stone age.  I seen positive weight training results for example like Jesse Vargas, went from a precise boxer non puncher, to a precise boxer who can now hurt you with 1 shot. 

Weight training is a tool used for those who are not athletically gifted in their respective sport, period.  ANY sport.  Look at JJ Reddick in basketball!!  College white boy shooter is what he was known for, now he is an all around player with a good physique who can keep up with the big boys on both ends of the floor.

Stu Im not refuting him.  I simply said that what he told a kid that had never even been to a boxing gym before was fuckin.g stupid.  And I will stand by telling a kid who's never stepped into a boxing gym to take cold showers and never to lift weights is dumb as sh.it to even mention to a newbie who has never boxed.  So I suggested rather to find a gym, a coach, and see how you like the sport.  Bc, like others have said in this thread most kids go for a few wks and don't return.  I see it all the time.  I was then attacked and told I was a scronny loser who knew nothing.  I really didnt think telling a kid who has never been to a gym to take cold showers was sound advice to start off with but hey, maybe Im wrong lol.  For MANY reasons I would never put my personal info on a site like this but Roy did and came thumping his chest like he was the best fighter in the world.  And when I looked I'll add one more time (bc I fought as an amateur and people like him are clowned for this back in my day) royboy was a grown man in his late 20's fighting kids.  And strangely was wayyyy beyond proud of it.  So Im gna let this die and wish roy the best.  If he is helping at a gym and coaching kids he's doing a good thing.  I'll agree to disagree on sound initial advice to a newbie.  Beyond that I wish everyone luck

And weight/resistance training is as valuable in boxing as it is in any sport.
