Floyd Mayweather has dodged tough opponents his whole career. Does this mean he is over rated? Yes there were fights Roy clearly avoided. Steve Collins, Nigel Benn at his peak, Gerard McClennan. Dariusz Michalczewski was an over rated chump. Jones would have destroyed him. He is a poorer version of Kessler. He got alot if hype he didn't deserve.
My point is Wicked, RJJ in his hayday was nearly unbeatable. He would have easily dealt with the boxers mentioned above. He was alongside with Floyd Mayweather the most naturally gifted boxer of his generation. His speed, ring savvy and reflexes were second to none.
I agree with you that Roy should have fought the toughest opponents out there at the time. He didn't and that alongside the fact that he fought on way too long will have a negative impact on his legacy. When Roy's reflexes started to wane he went from superman to average man.
My point is just because Roy avoided some of the best names around at the time doesnt mean he was over rated as a boxer. The guy was a genius in his prime. I can't answer why Roy avoided these fights. You can therefore label him alot of things but over rated as a fighter is not one of them. When he came back down from heavyweight he was never the same fighter.
Yes its somewhat annoying at his peak never to see Roy tested but there was nowhere there at the time that could have beaten him. Not even close..
