I wonder what price they'll give me on Williams.

Rooting for Pavlik...Hmmmm Can Williams move up and take the punch of a guy who hits harder than anyone he has ever fought.

Wow I cannot wait for this fight.

Paul won't drop a round, Awful matchup for Pavlik. I'll have a big breakdown later. It's just a matter of figuring out if Kelly can make it the distance. If Paul is at plus money I'll be very happy. 

 

And I totally agree with this.  This will be Williams' coming out party. 

Pavlik sets every power shot he throws up with a jab, Paul's not going to let him get that jab off because he's going to have him on the defensive all night. The death of Pavlik is the fact that he can't counterpunch. Just look at the Hopkins fight. Whenever Hopkins came forward and threw combinations Kelly retreated and covered up like this or like this. And that was against a guy throwing 40 or 50 punches per round. Notice the left hand stapled to the side of his head attempting to block shots. Paul will throw combos over and over again and turn Pavlik all night long.

I think this one opens at Pavlik -180 with Williams being the right side.

I have to disagree with Mack about both guys having fought nobody. Pavlik beat Miranda when he was at his peak and then he fought the guy who had the belts at 160 twice. Williams has fought everyone they could match him with, including Margarito at his peak. These guys have both been on HBO main events for a while now, so I don't see how either can enter as something of an unknown quantity.   

Spin I still never found Miranda to be a big name and Margarito's star is well gone. Yes they have fought at main event level but not the fights we as fans wanted so see. For one reason or another we never saw Williams against Sugar Shane, Berto, Cotto, Clottely the real legitimate Welterweights. Pavlik is in a poor middelweight division and the one fight we all wanted to see with AA nerver happened.

If you have a strong hunch for Williams go for it, you could easily be right but I can't advise waging a large amount of money on 2 unproven fighters at the top level (at least in my eyes). I have a hunch for Pavlik. I just think they are very evenly matched and Pavlik the bigger man with more to lose will find a way to counter Williams awkward style. Kelly is not a bad boxer and not as one dimensional as people make out. He has way more to lose then Williams and has a point to prove..Think we will see Williams move to Welter after this fight...

I see a guy unbeaten at 160, who is a monster at 160 against a guy relatively untested at 160 and is taking a huge step up in Class. Paul Williams may very well be the next big thing and my prediction may end up looking very foolish, but I think this fight has come 3 or 4 fights too soon for Williams at 160. I am just offically jumped on the Pavlik bandwagon...

Williams didn't get those fights because Mosley, Cotto, and the other big names weren't interested in taking a great risk of losing for a modest pay day. When he did get Margarito though, it was at a time when Floyd had turned down 8 million to fight Margarito. Of course Margarito's stock is down now that his gloves have been unloaded, but how can that discount what Williams did to him 18 months earlier? You also have to believe that shutting out Winky Wright (something Taylor and Pavlik conqueror Hopkins could not do) is significant.

We know who these guys are. If you don't feel confident, it's because you're not sure how they match up, but it is not because either guy is an unknown quantity.

I got into this discussion kind of late.

Huge mismatch Paul Williams will take apart Kelly Pavlik.

Pavlik was exposed by Jermaine Taylor showing how slow and easy he is to hit. Yes Jermaine lost but for 7 rounds Pavlik was out classed and the fight was a joke.

Hopkins schooled Pavlik, weight was NOT the issue that night, it was LACK of talent on Pavlik's behalf.

Yes Kelly you couldn't get your punches off because Hopkins Neutralized your and  you could NOT plant your feet.

Kelly Pavlik is nothing more than a strong puncher, Paul Williams will school him. Pavlik is slow, and has stamina issues.

Paul Williams has  NO stamina issues and Pavlik will be in for a bad beat down.

Kelly Pavlik can only fight brawlers (guys like himself). Some times we wonder why boxers take certain fights, I can see why Paul Williams took this fight, he gets two belts that night. 

Why did Kelly Pavlik take this? Guess it was money, because match up wise this doesn't make sense for him.

Wow Mack this is one fight I totally disagree with you on, pretty much on every level lol.

BOTH guys have fought legit competition. What happened to Margarito afterward doesn't take away from what Willams did.

Yes Pavlik fought a few good guys himself.. he demolished Edison Miranda (who is a replica of Pavlik more of an offensive fighter) brawler Mentality.

Pavlik then fought Taylor. Yes Taylor may lack "heart" to finish a fight or fighter off.. but realize Jermaine is one of the most gifted athletes in boxing.

He was taking Pavlik to school for 7 rounds.. made him look amateur like, guess what that wasn't a fluke.. Hopkins did the same thing to him and we know hopkins only fights 1 minute a round.

What you neglect to see if Pavlik must be planted to throw his punches, he is very hittable and very slow.

He's nothing more than a "good" brawler. If his feet aren't set he's a punching bag.

Paul Williams will outbox, out punch, and out smart him.

Styles make fights and well.. this is NOT the style for Kelly Pavlik.


I hope and pray this line is low, but I see Paul opening at -160 or so.

Weight is not an issue in this fight, it's  Kelly Pavliks lack of movement and defense :)

I see   Williams cruising to an easy victory and this will be his coming out party, the Winky Wright was a semi- coming out.. this one will be the real deal!

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Kelly KO'd  because Pavlik's stamina is an issue especially against someone like Paul Williams who is just a freak of nature.

Definitely looking forward to this one. I like Williams here mainly because the upside is with him. I don't think he's even close to hitting his ceiling in terms of either physical or technical development, and Pavlik seems to have done both.

Paul's ridiculous stamina leads me to think he can weather rough spots, the question he needs to answer in this one is whether he can maintain his insane activity against a guy with essentially his same frame. You could say the Margarito fight proved this to a degree, but Pavlik is a truer test. If he can combine elements of Bhop's lateral movement with his own punch variety, it's another long night for The Ghost.

Kelly punches in spurts, he is not as offensive as people think he is.

Kelly usually starts getting offensive minded when he starts getting tagged.

I agree also Pavlik reached his highest point already and Williams has a long ways to go before he reaches his (that's how versatile he is).

Pavlik is a move forward guy, sometimes attempts to use his jab (which is a decent jab) but his foot work is very slow and he needs to be planted to land his power shots.

Kind of insane asking Kelly Pavlik to combine Bernards movement.. with Kelly's punching.. realize Kelly is slow footed we cannot "make Pavlik suddenly have great footwork". He is who he is.. a tough brawler with a big heart but that's as far as his talent goes.

So we need to forget about having Bernards  movement, Pavlik's foot work is equivalent more to a Saint Bernard than Bernard Hopkins.


Still will be Paul Williams toughest  fight as Pavlik does have 2 belts, and he does have heart and some pop.

Nuttyrich: From all accounts Pavlik definitely didn't take this fight for money.  By all accounts he conceded a lot to make this fight happen and really didn't get what he deserved as the linear champ at 160.

I think it's a very interesting and exciting fight like all have said in this thread.  I am so glad that it got done, because it looked like it would never happen.  I think Pavlik hurts Williams a couple of times in a fight he is behind on and ends this with an exclamation point.  This fight has all the makings for some serious drama.
