Sakio Bika vs. Peter Manfredo Bika (Even) (Sportsbook) 3 units
I was surprised to see Bika tabbed as the slight dog, even though the fight is in Manfredo's hometown of Providence. Although some observers like his boxing skills, Manfredo's always struck me as overrated -- I see him as somewhat crude, with slow feet and an overall lack of desire. Watching Manfredo, I often get the feeling that he's a bit confused in the ring, as if he's been coached up so much that he doesn't fight "in the moment." This may sound like I'm grasping at intangibles, but the fact is that winning a boxing match has a lot to do with intangibles, and Manfredo's no match for a world-class fighter. Sure, Bika's a bit of a fringe contender, but he's held his own against world-class competition (Calzaghe, Bute). After fighting those slick southpaws, Manfredo's going to seem relatively easy to figure out, and I expect Bika's awkward style to give Manfredo fits. Manfredo has a habit of just doing nothing when he gets confused, and I can see Bika stealing some early rounds due to Manfredo's frustration. As the fight wears on, I expect Bika to continue to land enough to keep Manfredo from getting the hometown decision.

Oh goodness, talk about a textbook demolition. Just as expected, Manfredo looked confused from the get go. Bika completely overpowered him with a combination of body punches, hooks and uppercuts. This might not have ended as early as it did had Manfredo not earned a cheap abomination of what was ruled a knockdown in the 2nd, after getting rocked several times in the 1st. For a few seconds following the KD, it looked like Bika was going to take a swing at the ref. Thankfully he didn't and managed to compose himself and in my estimation, did enough to make it no worse than a 10-9 round. After going back to his corner, Bika came back in the 3rd like a possessed animal and didn't stop punching until he had Manfredo completely frozen, absorbing blow after blow. The crowd in the Dunkin Donuts Center was not happy with the result, as evidenced by their littering of the rind following the demise of their hometown hero. Here's another fight where it literally pays to pound an early generous line. The oddsmakers weren't fooling anyone installing Manfredo as the hometown favorite, as the price on Bika straight up closed around -140 at most books. And to think, Bika by KO would have payed in the +300 to +400 range!
