....The bigger result in all of this? Not only were they taken out of that game mentally from the start, they had two more road games to compete in after consuming all of that energy to try and get back in the game. Up next? Fell behind Tennessee Tech early, were down double digits in a high tempo game, closed the gap right before half, and competed with them the rest of the 2H, just ran out of gas. That was roady #2. Roady #3, and most recently, came at one of the worst teams in the country in Jacksonville State. When you look at the first few results of the road trip, I think it’s pretty conceivable that they weren’t going to have one of their better performances in game three of the roadtrip here, and even though they were favored, they found themselves down at the half by 17. The result? They got back in it, actually had a chance to take that ball game as well. As an outsider, you look at Tennessee State and see that the three games on the road, they just flat out sucked, but in reality, once they were woken up, they played far above their competition. If they can avoid those slow starts, then the team is obviously in a better situation, and that better situation should come at home, and should come in a situation where they need to focus. Going back to what I was saying earlier, this Tennessee State offense is pretty much designed around the three-pointer. They get into their offense, and I’d almost call it a modified Memphis dribble drive, but the only reason they’re using the dribble drive is to attack and kick out if that makes any sense. They don’t look to take the first open shot, they look to take the best shot they think they’re going to get. Against the press, I’ll take my chances with Miller beating the press by himself, but I also expect Jay Harris to see some more minutes b/c of it. The thing with Miller is that he’s familiar with the press, and he’s not going to be going crazy if he is able to beat it. If you watched last year’s meetings, a lot of the turnovers came b/c they beat the press with ease and they tried to go two-on-one against Faried in the paint, and that obviously wasn’t a good thing to do. With the current state of the team, they’re in a spot where they play better at home, in a spot where they’ll need to focus, and the offense should show up because of one more thing within the matchups. You’ll notice that I brought up what Morehead State wants you to do and that’s get the ball in the paint, force the offense into the middle where they can defend at their best. Tennessee State’s not going to do that. The dribble drive and kick is designed to be a dribble drive and kick, it’s not a dribble drive and break your guy off the dribble and get to the hoop, and I think that’s where Morehead State is at a disadvantage here. They’re not only thinking you are going to get into the lane, but when you do, they’re collapsing on you with multiple players, which is going to leave wide open shots on the outside for a good three-point shooting team. And that’s where I get value. I don’t get a Tennessee State offense that’s running set plays hoping for just one shot, I get a Tennessee State offense that’s going to take the first available shot against the zone, and it should be a good look. The game really comes down to one thing, and that’s how Tennessee State starts out. I’m willing to invest that they don’t start out as slow as they did in recent games on the three game roady. The shoe is on the other foot now, and it’s Morehead State and it’s complacent jump shooting offense that will be taking part in the back end of a three game roady, before returning home to play the current #1 and #2 teams in the conference on its home floor.

    5* Tennessee State -5

I don't see any value in the total. Think you're better off going after a Bonnie 1H hoping for a Dayton letdown, but then again you got a couple new faces for Dayton who will be looking to make some noise in a starting role. Just a tough game. If I had a gun to my head in this one, i'd probably pull the trigger.

They should be able to outscore Texas A&M and get the win, but backing that offense and horrible shot selection for double digit chalk with Missouri on deck may not be worth it. Also looking to cover double digit chalk in a game that's probably going to be played pretty slow (last year's games 57, 57, and 63 possessions). Have a coaching change on the A&M side of things, and he's a bit faster, but not much. Your call, I'm having a tough time figuring out A&M this year.

keep up the good work dude, if you could for a second touch on Texas/Texas A&M.  Thinking about laying a rather heavy wager on Texas.

Will have more on Cuse/Nova later I think.

I like Marshall, just don't like their ability (or lack thereof) to score from the outside facing taller guards than they're use to matching up against. Probably holds value, though. UAB's coming off a failure in what they viewed as their National Title game in Memphis. Think the under holds value. Both teams defenses shut down the other teams offensive strengths, and I think it's pretty clear that Mike Davis can slow any team he wants to down when he wants to.

You're definitely going to get the helter/skelter up and down back and forth pace, but few turnovers as both take care of the basketball, and few turnovers lead to fewer points in a game like this b/c both team's defenses are much better than the offenses they bring to the table, thus making it harder to score in those half-court settings. Also get a letdown from Charlotte and lookahead to STL, and a mini Umass lookahead to St. Joseph's. Trying to convince myself on pointing to the under, will be leaning that way at the very least.

Thank you for your time and expertise. I watched the Memphis UAB game and here is what I saw. Mike Davis watching his team play there tails off for like you say their national title game and when someone makes a mistake jumps up and down on the sidelines, throw papers on the ground and acts like a 3 year old having a temper tantrum. His kids just couldnt get it done and towards the very end of the game looked in the air and said fuck man. Now to me this isnt the way top coach's present themselves and think it more of a negative than a positive to his players. I told myself the next game especially at home I would fade UAB and tonite is here. Good luck on your plays and appreciate your thoughts and insight

I love the guy's defense. There just comes a time when other teams are going to figure it out, and if you don't have the necessary offense to score with teams when that does happen and your defense isn't crisp, he's going to struggle. And that's what's happening this year. C-USA is up a bit this year in terms of having balanced offenses, so could be a long year.

I learn so much about the game just from reading your insights on this thread and gives me a different perspective and I have watched this sport for over 25 years.   Impressive knowledge and analysis Neil! Thanks.

GL with Ten State, I had them with u vs Eastern Ky, and I still can't get over that loss so I am still mad at them lol.

Do u think Michigan will take care of NW and any ideas on Old D vs Delaware?   Thanks

Eh. Michigan/NW just depends on which team is hotter. Sounds pretty cliche, but the winner will be the team that shoots better. I think both are familiar with what the other is going to do defensively, just a weird matchup.

I will have something on the ODU game in a bit.

Not a big fan of how Xavier has been playing recently, so I didn't look at that game. Best to avoid for a few weeks.

I do not like Missouri. Another tough game. Commented on it previously.

I don't see 10 wins, no. I also didn't see that coming last night.

I count 8, maybe 9 if they don't fall flat on their face at Penn State next week. I think 9 gets them in the tourney, 8 is a bit shaky.

Do u know anything about Central Michigan vs Eastern Michigan Neil?

I like how Central has been shooting of late and although they are young with a bunch of sophs and freshman starting, I think they can beat a bad offense in Eastern.   Any thoughts on this obscure game?

    Thanks
