MTSU won 74-68 at Florida Atlantic Saturday to end its skid in conference play, but senior guards Nigel Johnson and Demetrius Green are still struggling.
Johnson has scored only 11 points in the last four games combined. Green left the FAU game with a sprained ankle, but he is expected to return Thursday. Junior forward Montarrio Haddock returns from a one-game suspension.
MTSU needs its full allotment of players to face a talented FIU lineup, which has been hampered by injuries all season.
Six-foot-10 freshman forward Freddy Asprilla recently returned from an injury. He had 28 points and 10 rebounds in a 68-63 loss at MTSU on Jan. 10. Seven-foot center Russell Hicks, an All-Sun Belt selection last season, has also returned from a foot injury.
Alex Galindo, also an All-Sun Belt selection, leads FIU with a 15.7 scoring average. He was out early in the season with an ankle injury.
“When healthy, there’s not five to 10 better freshmen in America than (Asprilla), and I mean nowhere in the country,” Davis said. “He’s been hurt, but in nine league games, he’s averaging 18 (points) and 11 (rebounds). Those are better numbers than (MTSU’s Desmond Yates).
“FIU may be the most talented team in our league; they just haven’t been healthy. But that team can win our conference tournament.”
