I have been a Dukie for a while but I am also a realist. This program has been overrated for a couple of years now and is in trouble of falling down a tier.
Coach K has got to recruit a dominant big man. This 4 guard lineup and three point shooting plan is failing.
Duke repeatedly gets hammered on the glass and cannot defend against skilled big men. Not to mention they get absolutley nothing offensively from their big men.
If Coach K will remember, when Duke was last dominat it was b/c they had great big men, i.e. Elton Brand and Carlos Boozer.
He has done a better job of recruiting more athelticism recently but has to get more skilled and physical inside, in my opinion.

I think that to some extent, K is alot like Gary Williams. That is, they don't recruit very hard. For my Terps, that has created a real problem as we are now in danger of being a very mediocre ACC team if Gary does not start busting his ass on the recruiting trail. For Duke, K has the advantage of still getting a ton of McD All Americans strictly based on reuptation. However, I don't think he is working that hard to get that marquee big man. If they don't call and say they want to come to Duke, he isn't going out to battle for him. Battier was awesome. Shelden was great also. Beyond that, Duke tends to get a guy that is such a stiff that you have to wonder if they can walk and chew gum at the same time.
The danger in all of this is that the CBB landscape is getting so competitive that K is going to find himself in a real bind in a couple of years. K does it the right way like Gary does....that is, I belive they are very honest guys. Unfortunately, many of these younger coaches (Donovan is a perfect example) cheat their ass off to get the marquee AAU guys. As the landscape gets more competitive, guys like Gary and K just fall further behind if they are not going to commit themselves to recruting.
A kid does not want to see Keith Booth or WoJo in his living room. He wants the real deal.
For what it's worth, once the Dance starts, I am a huge ACC fan first. I was pulling for you guys today. Sucked that it ended like that.

They will a lot of games during the year, but come tourney time they will lose to teams that can dominate them inside and force them to rely strictly on outside shooting.
I thought this team was heavily overrated all year and it showed during the tourney, but they do have solid young guys to build a winner from. Now all they need is some solid 4-5 players, and a true PG to have behind Paulus and they'll be good for next year. I don't think it's time to panic just yet for Duke fans.

FWIW, this Duke team was not at all overrated. They were and still are a Top 10-12 team. If they had been hitting today, they would have killed WV. When yo rely so much on the outside shot, there are gonna be days like this but that does not take anything away from how good a team they really are.

See my Terps winning in Chapel Hill.......on an off day, it's so easy for the critics to say they were overrated but let's be realistic. 85% of the time, this Duke team could run anyone off the court.

another excellent point. K has been adamantly against a player leaving early, even one year early, for years. That does hurt them also. I think his preference to get intelligent players hurts them becuase often these player saren't "superfreak" athletic....so he trades athleticism for brains to some extent.

Coach K hasn't been recruiting pro style players since he lost Brand, Avery and Maggette that one year. He has to go back to that. He is the best coach in the country regardless if you like him and I HATE duke.

I was doing the very thing all of you were in analyzing the future of Duke, as a fan and graduate I feel we have gone very soft. We don't have star-go-to type guys. We have missed out on some key big man recruits the past two years. Patterson of Kentucky, and Monroe of Gtown next year are two off the top of my head. Until Duke gets an interior presence as in past years we will be 2nd tier. The 2nd half of this year Duke was 2nd tier....

Swizzol, today I don't disagree but Duke is Duke like it or not. They are one recruit in 2009 from being a power again. There is alot of parity in college sports right now, hoops is no exception. Also your avatar improvement is perhaps the most impressive thing I have seen in the tourney season thus far...
