A Few Words to Texas Backers

No, I didn't miss the game.  In fact I watched a replay of it on ESPNU the night before the championship game.

You are right to take issue with this statement.  Nebraska's defense is comprable in size to Alabama's defense, and one could certainly make a legitimate argument that their defense was the best in the country at the end of the season.  I think I would give Bama's defense the edge in speed, but there is no deying how good Nebraska was down the stretch.

My point was that McCoy was injured when he turned an option keeper upfield.  In the NFL you don't see coaches expose their QBs on that type of play, and Bama's defense is very comparably to an NFL defense.  I said in several posts leading up to this game that if Mack Brown/Major Applewhite insist on running Colt McCoy in that manner against the Alabama defense, there is a likelihood he would not finish the game.  They took that chance and it backfired on them.

My intention was not to diss the Cornhusker defense for whom I have tremendous respect.

Coming into the game Texas statistically had the #1 rushing defense in the country, and had not allowed a single 100-yard rusher all season.  In this game Ingram ran for 116 yards and averaged 5.3 yards per carry, and Trent Richardson ran for 109 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per carry.

I think most people who backed Bama believed (as I did) that, despite their lofty ranking, Texas would not be able to stop Bama's power running attack.  And that, my friend, was a prediction that proved to be deadly accurate.

I'll have to watch the game again to get a better feel for how he played.

I was surprised the way Bama's D played in the second half.  It looked like a coaching error to allow Texas's best player on the field, Shipley, get Texas back into the game.  Atleast it made for an interesting game.

That call by Mack Brown was absolutely bewildering.  After running the ball for 9 yards, I thought for sure they wouldn't snap the ball again.  Calling a timeout deep in Bama territory with your backup freshman QB in the game and zero chance to score any points before the half was mystifying to say the least.  Then they come out of the timeout to call a shovel pass???  WTF???  This might be worse than Lester signaling to Jordan Jefferson to spike the ball with one second on the game clock!!!

Sometimes you just scratch your head and wonder how and why these guys are being paid millions of dollars to do what they do.

i agree 100% with this statement... seen Colt fold enough times to know what to expect from him... Gilbert played admirably if you ask me...

well, like 5 3 and outs in the 2nd and 3rd quarter by your freshman qb is going to allow that to happen so your "conclusion" is a tad misleading.

they only had like 50 yds in the second half, right?  muschamp made some great adjustments and scolded Muck pretty hard at the half i heard.

TX dbs played exceptionally well.  bama's receivers could not get open and Mc never had time to throw anyways.

Gilbert is going to be have a great career and has a great arm.  in two years, watch out.  this game was very good for him to have this early as such a young player.

Gilbert to Darius White is really going to cause havoc for defenses in the future.

finally someone who saw the game objectively... if i'm not mistaken, you were on Texas... most Texas backers were cursing his name because of the TOs in the last few minutes... but he was in a bad situation at that point... blindside blitz that wasn't picked up, and after that Bama was just teeing off knowing they had to throw throw throw... too easy...

but when the game was still on the line, he showed a lot of balls and a lot of heart, and a pretty fuckin' good arm... if i were a Texas fan i would be feeling a lot better about the future right now...

he folds in big games when the pressure is on... they may have won some of those games, but he has not played well when facing a legit defense during his career...
