Current State of the SMU Football Program- Frisco Bowl Insights

Question

It has been a whirlwind two weeks for the SMU football program.

December 6th: Chad Morris abruptly announces he is leaving SMU to take the HC position at Arkansas. Chad takes almost his entire offensive coaching staff with him. A number of high profile recruits decommit and some also follow him to Arkansas. A huge gut shot to the entire SMU team just two weeks before their first bowl game for every player on the team considering they haven't been in 4 years.

December 7th: Associate head coach and running backs coach Jeff Traylor is announced as interim head coach and will lead the team in the Frisco Bowl.

The entire team loves coach Traylor and wants him to be the new permanent HC. They signed petitions and held player only meetings about it. They even met with the SMU AD about their wanting Traylor to be their next permanent head coach. They were extremely vocal about this.

December 10th:

Reports start coming out saying: Sonny Dykes will be the next head coach and the players went ballistic and were extremely vocal about their displeasure with this decision:

December 11th: Sonny Dykes is announced as head coach and offers Traylor to still coach the team through the bowl game

December 12th: Jeff Traylor announces that he will be leaving SMU to take a position under old HC Morris at his new school Arkansas. You can only imagine what type of impact this had on the SMU players, moral must had been very down.

December 14th: While new coach Dykes is on the road making home visits and high school visits trying to salvage any verbal commits that are still left it is announced that Graduate Assistant GJ Kinne will be calling the plays for SMU from the box for the Frisco Bowl. Apparently Kinne has been working with SMU QB Hicks to formulate the gameplan for the bowl game. A graduate assistant calling the plays and making the game plan.

December 16th: Interviews from players after practice confirm that it is literally just the players out there conducting practice for the upcoming bowl game. QB Hicks also says while they get down about the situation he still likes the energy he sees. That is putting up a good face, but the fact that he mentions the players are somewhat down about the situation tells me the morale is low. Motivation to me is one of the biggest factors in bowl games. They have a pretty stout defence. While I could go deeper in an analysis of LT, this team played some very competitive and close games with some very good teams. I think they lost 3 very close games agaisnt good teams by a combined 3 points is what I read. They have a mobile QB that while not a great passer I think he can do well against a very young SMU defensive backfield which is already down an injured starter. A starting OT is also out for SMU for a violation of team rules and their Defense as a whole is AWFUL while the LT D is pretty damn good.Taking all these factors into mind I think the value here lies with taking the 4-4.5&#x2B; points with LT in the Frisco Bowl game. Would love to hear other thoughts, good luck guys!

&#xA;can confirm WR Kevin Thomas, DB Will Jeanlys and OL Bryce Wilds were sent home from the bowl due to various violations of team rules.&#xA;also to note, Jordan Wyatt (team leading CB) suffered season ending injury in the last game of the reg season&#xA;haven&#x27;t confirmed 100%, but heard this morning that former WR coach Justin Stepp will be back in DFW (from Arkansas) to assist with coaching the game.

so you guys are assuming that the game plan that Morris and his coaches put together for 3 weeks, is suddenly going to leading to a La Tech and cover, because the players are sad that morris left and that they could not dictate whom SMU hired to replace him...I guess its possible...this is a quasi home game for SMU. and these players have known that whether it was A&M or some other program, that Morris would be gone at the end of the season. I see a Baylor v. Boise situation from last year when Baylor with all their coaches with one leg out the door, kicked the crap out of Boise. prima facie, with a clown like dykes watching over them, especially if they resent him, would be bad news for SMU. But, this La Tech team is far from elite, and it appears that the line has not suddenly moved in La Tech's favor. Makes you wonder what the impact will be, doesn't it...

I will be at the game, since I live 5 miles from the stadium...and I will be backing SMU to show what they can do...

SMU still has its entire Defensive Coaching staff in place...Sure, that was not the strength of the team, and they honestly sucked, but it gives at least the D continuity for one more game...These SMU kids have sucked for so long prior to Morris arrival, and have not been to a bowl since 2012...so do you guys actually think they are going to say, ah fk it, coach morris is gone, they did not hire are favored assistant, so we are just going to throw in the towel, and say let a quasi directional Louisiana school, with incrementally less overall talent walk all over them in the Frisco Bowl, 20 miles from the SMU campus, in front of the SMU fans...I think that is delusion.  granted, as a capper, I agree, one should consider all information, including some of the information posted above in evaluating whether SMU or La Tech would be the best play.   But, from my perspective, I think SMU will show up and TCB and cover tonight...for what its worth...

I understand that you made a wager and you are trying to find any reason to justify your side and discredit the other, but if you don't think the information above is relevant, you are a delusional homer who bets only with his emotions.

Trust me, I know information like this isn't foolproof. I lost 4k on the Holiday Bowl last year by fading the Gophers because of the gangrape or whatever the hell it was... Obviously teams don't simply fold because of coaching changes, we've watched enough bowl games to know that. I still think this information is great. Did you even watch the interviews with the QB? They are in lala land
