They only scheduled the game to get bowl eligible. So someone cares. Whether that is the players or not, who knows. If they win they have the longest active bowl streak in the nation.
The question won't be about VT motivation, it will be about whether they are good enough to beat Marshall

Like clowncar said, somebody cares. VPI has been to a bowl every year since 1992 which were the early years of Frankie "Lunchpail" Beamer Ball.
VPI is paying Marshall U $300,000 to play this game. In fact, they guaranteed Moo $100,000 even if they had lost to the Cavaliers, just for their work pre-planning the trip to Blacksburg if necessary.
To sweeten the deal they entered into a home-away 2 game series with the Herd. So somebody definitely cares.
Guess it would be a short trip to the Belk Bowl.
Don't know if it was the Bowl possibility or the sight of annual rival victim UVA, or both, but the Hokies had an inspired effort against the WahooS. That snapped a 4 game losing skein both straight up and vs the spread in which VT was abysmal. Bud Fosters banged up and young D was getting pummeled (#99 Total Defense). QB play was way inconsistent.
But like clowncar said, the ? is are the Hokies good enough to beat C-USA Marshall. Freshman qb Green is recovered from an early season injury and the Herd has been hot winning their last 3. The backup tailback replacing Moss has 3 straight good games as well. The Herd defense has been stout.
Believe me, Moo is fired up for this game. They are licking their chops to get a shot at another ACC team. They played NCSt tough at the Joan in Huntington with the Wolfpack sealing the win with a pick 6 late.
Bragging rights also on the line here against neighboring Hokies. Even Mountaineer fans will be pulling for the Herd in this spot. Fully expect Doc Holiday's boys to be ready to play against a beatable VT squad having a down year. Since they didn't make the C-USA playoff this would make Marshall'season, a big gobbler feather in their hat.
The spread is short. The points are worth a look.
If you can't close you can't cover.
