South Carolina plays a base 4-2-5 type base defence with a "spur" player that is a hybrid LB/safty. DeVonte Holloman plays this position. Holloman started at safty last year and moved to the spur position in the off season. Holloman was suspended for the first game agaisnt ECU because of a DUI. Holloman is perfect for this position because of his size and speed. He is about 6'2" 230. His backup at the spur spot stepped up into the starting line up and had 16 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown. Allen is expected split time with Holloman against Georgia and Holloman will also see time at LB in dime packages against Georgia. Holloman may possibly be moved back to safty to get him and Allen on the field at the same time, but Holloman is still practicing at spur for now.
Cornerback Victor Hampton is suspended for the first 3 games and will not play agaisnt UGA. This is not a huge loss. Hampton is good enough to get playing time, but he is not one of the top corners on the team.
Akeem Auguste is a senior cornerback who missed the first game because of an ankle injury. Auguste did not practice yesterday and was expected to pratice today (9/6). Auguste said that he expects to be able to play 15-20 plays against Georgia. Auguste playes a larger role in the defence than Hampton. Auguste is the second or third best corner on the team after Gilmore. Gilmore and C.C. Whitlock will be the starters at corner this week and Auguste should be able to play in nickle and dime situations.
Freshman corner Marty Mattox sat out the first game for acadimic reasons but will be able to play this week. Mattox is from Athens, GA and he is expected to get onto the field against UGA.
Depth in the secondary will not be a problem against UGA.
Good post. The following is a re-post of a post I made regarding USCjr's secondary prior to the ECU game.
"Martay Mattox will be suspended due to academic issues from the spring. Victor Hampton and DeVonte Holloman are also suspended, while Brison Williams is out for at least the first half of the season and Akeem Auguste has yet to practice due to a foot injury. The only healthy cornerbacks for USC are Stephon Gilmore, Marty Markett, C.C. Whitlock and Cadarious Sanders."
Getting Hollman back is definitely huge for South Carolina.
