My only play for Friday's action... will update record after Thursday's games.
MARSHALL +13 (-120)
The long and short of it:
1) Big rivalry game. Like the kind where two brothers with the same dad but different mom's are playing each other.
2) New Marshall Coach Doc Holliday used to be WVU's recruiting coordinator and Associate head coach and was an ass't there from 1979-1999. It's safe to say he knows his opponent.
3) WVU's margin of victory the last four meetings:
2006 +32
2007 +25
2008 +24
2009 +17
2010 ? (better than +13 hopefully )
4) IMO, the overall talent at WVU has declined since Rich Rod bolted for Ann Arbor... Stewart may be liked by his players but I never found him to be the kind of Coach I'd want to try and get my program back into the BCS.
5) WVU only led 10-0 at the half against Coastal Carolina last week. If you take away WVU's 16 play opening drive for a TD, the next five series in the half included (3) three-n-outs, a one play drive that ended with an interception, and a seven play drive that ended with a FG (FYI, it was 1st and goal at the CC 6 yd line and the Mountaineers gave it to Devine three straight carries that resulted in 2 net yds.) WVU was favored by 41.5 in that game. They had 3 TO's against, ahem, Coastal Carolina.
6) Marshall played Ohio State last week, got their asses whooped at the Horseshoe but are now playing their home opener in a rivalry game... oh and WVU IS NOT EVEN CLOSE to OSU's talent level or coaching.
7) Marshall gets back starting MLB Kellen Harris, who didn't play against OSU. This is a HUGE boost to the Herd run defense.
All this to say that this would be a bigger play for me if Marshall had a better offense but there's enough reasons to back the Herd here on Friday night.
