Posting this with my Kent bets pending. Win or lose them, I enter this one on the plus side. A crazy Bowl season, took my usual bashing, won some I should have lost, and lost some I should have won. Such is life and such is gambling. So like me or hate me, really guys, I could care. I do what I do and I am what I am. A Mice. And this Bowl season I won; hope you all did likewise. That's what we're here for. Hope to be around for Sept '13 kick-offs.
This is my #3-rated Bowl, fwiw. #1 Minny and #4 Clemson both in, #2 Nebraska stayed home 2nd half, and # 5 Wisky loser by 1/2. Don't think this write-up changes anyone's opinion, lots of Bama lovers and Irish lovers out there. And haters.
Mice grew up in small town of mostly Italian Catholics. All they ever talked was NY Yankees, NY Giants, and ND football. I lived on the wrong side of the tracks and grew up hating all three. My fav teams were whoever those 3 were playing against. When I got old enough to get hooked up with a Bookie I took my hatred out on them. And learned in a hurry my #1 rule of betting, Don't bet with you heart. I learned in a hurry that going against pinstripes and leprechauns isn't gonna make you rich.
Regardless of what you may have inferred from previous picks, I do not hate the SEC conference. I have simply stated that, right or wrong, it's my opinion that there's value going against them. That's proven correct the last 2 years and this year the SEC's 4-3-1 ATS vs the Bowl number. I am not de-grading a tremendous football program, a proven Coach, or SEC Conference. Nor this year's Tide team that could win this game by 4 TDs. But, they've proven one thing. They're beatable. A&M proved that and Georgia was 7 seconds from doing it.
The Irish started the season staring at the #3 toughest schedule in the NCAA (Bama's #14). And benefitted by a strong home-based schedule, some controversial assists from officials, and the graces of Touchdown Jesus, they went to bed Nov 17 as the only unbeaten team in the country. A 3 pt escape vs. a 6-6 Purdue team that got annihilated by OK St. An OT gift from the striped ones vs. Stanford. A narrow escape vs. BYU. Another gift from the stripes vs Pitt to send the game into 3 OT's. 6 wins of less than 9 pts. And hidden among those, thrashings of Miami, OKL, USC and convincing wins over the 2 Mich Big-10 teams. Bottom line...12 games they suited up, twelve times they walked off the field with a "W". Bama didn't do that. No one else in the Country did that. And now you want to give a Defense that allows 10.3 ppg and has only allowed 9 TD's (2 by rush) all of 10 points? I call that value.
I mention a lot the difference between conferences and match-ups. Bashers want to bash me, that's fine. Ask Les Miles about matching up with Taj Boyd. Ask Bill Muschamp about matching-up with Teddy Bridgewater. Neither of those two teams had a chance. Read your tip sheets, ask ESPN and Robert Smith, or majority of guys on here. Everett Golson presents those same match-up problems. He is no Taj Boyd or Teddy B, but has a stronger support group here. His offense was #11 in Country in time of possession. They're not overpowering but they're efficient. And smart. No need to tell me those 11 games weren't against the SEC, I know that. And should the game come down to a FG, the Irish with a +9 advantage there.
Bama has ventured out of SEC vs Michigan (week 1), FL Atlantic, and Western Ky. Throw out the 2 cupcakes and you have 1 game in which you've had your entire spring and camp to prepare for. A real dose of SEC style football. Don't accuse me of rapping it, I'm not, but it is what it is. Notre Dame has played and beaten teams from the Big East, Big 10, Big 12, and ACC. A lot of different styles with most given only a week to prepare for. And Brian Kelly has walked away with nothing but wins. Not all pretty, but wins. Maybe lucky, but wins.
Other than the dual-threat that Golson presents, I think one other key match-up determines this. Can Tide's Barrett Jones and Chance Warmack slow Tuitt, Lewis, and Nix. That's a half ton of beef. Fast beef. And Shembo's added another 11 tackles for loss. I won't mention Te'o...ESPN and those boys tell you enough about him and you've seen all his highlights anyway...
For those that reference Angles..undefeated 12-win dogs of +5 or more are 11--1 ATS and 10-2 SU. Not these 2 teams and not all SEC plays, so that doesn't matter much. And Bowl favs that have won last 2 consecutive Bowls cash at less than 20%. Ask Boise. Or Florida. (Cinci did cover vs Duke. Miracles happen!)
23-21. I'm wrong alot
have a great year and lots of luck to everyone, stay healthy and stay safe
