Mich St - Wisky discussion

I understand, Russell Wilson is a stud.  But he hasn't faced any adversity yet this year.  He's played 5 home games and 1 neutral site (v.s. NIU) and he's sat behind a big OL and waited patiently for a WR to get open.  MSU has 16 sacks in their last two games v.s. QB's that are actually more mobile than Wilson, and had those sacks v.s. pretty damn good OL's.  Obviously neither of those QB's are anywhere near Wilson's throwing ability, but the bottom line is MSU has been harrassing opposing QB's.  

If MSU's running game is shut down, Wisky probably covers this, but if Sparty can run the ball and play ball control, they should be able to hang around.  Last year, MSU held the ball for 37 minutes despite having 3 TO's and a punt return for a TD.  If MSU has the ball for 37 minutes, that doesn't even allow Wilson a whole lot of time to operate.  

The decision on Gholston will weigh heavily on whether or not I end up betting this, but I won't be laying the points.

This is a case where watching games will burn people.

Wisconsin has played a pile of shit. They literally haven't played anyone, and no a night game at home on national TV against a Nebraska team that is way down is not much of a challenge. Who wouldn't look good against the teams and more importantly defenses they have played so far this season? There is a reason they aren't even a Top 10 team in the computers and it's because they haven't played anyone and are probably overrated. Michigan State has the best defense by far they have seen yet. State faced Notre Dame and Michigan two very good offenses and held them to 275 and 250 yards. This is no fraud. One of Russell Wilson's flaws at NC State was when you could get good pressure on him he would force throws and make mistakes. Leopards don't change their spots. He hasn't faced any heat yet or been asked to do anything other than hand it off and run it up on horrific defenses.

Where is the value here with Wisconsin? I mean you are buying a team at an all time high, who buys teams at their all time high in their first road game against a team with a better defense on national TV at night? What is this, amateur hour? I have already seen the Top 10 teams have covered every game angle everywhere this week, even the TV pundits have been saying there have been no upsets. Whenever these trends go mainstream it is time to go the other way. Oddsmakers adjust, just look at the numbers this week on the big teams they all look inflated. Sooner or later there will be a bloodbath on these top teams and IMO it starts this week.

I was able to stop him alright. But he was just milking the clock, nothing else.

SEC football is NOT college football. If I enjoyed that bullshit I would watch the NFL.

Question: If the clock was not in play, would teams in the NFL play the same way? No they wouldn't. Every drive would be a maximum effort to score points. What's the point of burning down the play clock when you're down 2 scores? And when you're down by 7 and about to score, what's the point of milking the clock for short yardage? I remember one team had 2nd and Goal from the 3 yard line and just handed the ball off behind the line of scrimmage for a loss. The announcer says "That's a good play right here because you don't want to give the ball back with time in case you score". So you throw a down away, basically take a knee to burn some clock and put yourself in 3rd and long situation. That team ended up turning it over on downs and lost the football game. 

My cousin was supposed to play FOOTBALL. Rush up the middle for a couple, rush up the middle for 5 yards and get 1st down, repeats. Not one pass attempt was made.

I made the comment about the weather- the temp for the game will be in the upper 40's- Not cold by any measure and Wilson played on the road the last couple of years against Maryland and V. Tech in similar if not colder weather. The weather won't be a factor against Wilson in this game-

This is obviously one of the hottest contested games on this site- lots of good points can be made for either side- For those who laughed at Wisky's schedule so far- Mich. St's is not much better and they got drilled by Notre Dame- Spartan fans don't want to hear that- I can guarantee you Wisky would take that Notre Dame team to the woodshed- Now i think Mich. St. matches up better but in the end i think Russell Wilson is the difference maker here. If not i will be more than glad to admit i was wrong-

Weather forecast changes in Michigan hourly.... temp I hear has gametime in the low 40's with temps slowly dropping into 30's. Winds around 10-20 making it feel colder,  This could and probably will change.

Notre Dame is a very good team... they will run the table...including Stanford

When you are down by 2 scores, shouldn't you be trying to score as fast as possible because you know the other team will milk the clock as much as possible for if and when you get the ball back? An onside-kick is too unlikely to be considered in a "milking the clock" decision when you are DOWN by 2 scores.

not once have i said you shouldn't score as fast as possible when down by 2 scores- where are you getting this from?- of course a team should try to score quick when down- You were arguing that it isn't sporting to keep pounding the rock and burning clock when up by 28 points. I can tell you one thing- the other coach will be very pissed if you are up by 28 in the fourth quarter and are passing and trying to score- running the ball milks the clock- if a team can't stop that, then tough shit- You must be confused about what we were talking about

Well then too bad, try to stop us if you can. If my team was up by 28 means, this means I could get my guys to do some "practice" drills, mix it up a bit, run various forms of offenses without risking much. If you get intercepted no problem we're still up 28.

If one play has a better chance of scoring, with an added chance of an INT, but not enough to outweight the potential 7 points, then by all means go for it.

When you're playing Poker in a cash game or have a commanding chip lead in a tournament, you can take risks playing hands with implied odds or run some big bluffs knowing your opponents can't call often enough. If you get caught, you're still in the game. But if you were short stacked, you would hardly ever risk your stack on a pure bluff.

If you were medium-stacked with a small lead, you would almost never take a stupid risk, even as a call preflop because those chips represent a bigger ratio to your stack then if you were chip lead.

Likewise teams in college that sit on a big lead will likely get passed in the rankings by teams that put up fancy splashy numbers. Nitting it up is not FOOTBALL. If you're a very good team and you run the ball into the pile on every first and second down before running a play-action pass on 3rd down to keep the ball, you might as well take a knee on 1st and 2nd downs no?

I guarantee you that if LSU and Alabama were not playing each other this year, LSU would have covered against lowly Kentucky.

Now LSU, Alabama and Okalahoma all know that all they need to do is win out to make the NC game. OU didn't cover against piss poor Kansas that got 70 hung on them by OSU.

But then you have teams like Wisconsin, Boise State and Stanford covering spreads because they know they have to.

Imo, I don't think Wisky playing away from home can be used.  Just my opinion.  I think where you use that card is on teams that have a shaky QB or young QB.  In that instance, communication is key, getting flusted by the crowd is key, folding under pressue is key.. etc, etc.

Russel Wilson is a veteran QB (much like Moore from Boise).  He has played in many, MANY hostile stadiums (more so than Spartan Stadium).  I know sometimes the ACC gets kicked around by their play, but they do have some pretty hectic stadiums/crowds.  Therefore, if Wilson throws a pick, or has a couple bad series, he is going to be more apt to let that roll of his shoulders than most QB's.  Personally, I think its going to hard to rattle the guy.

In games like this; it's going to come down to which QB makes plays.  Throw out the run games, b/c they are both going to produce (enough)...  It's going to be which QB makes plays at crucial times, like 3 & 7... 

You gotta bet this game with what you see on the field.  I think you throw out night game.  Throw out Wisky's loaded home schedule.  Throw out Spartan Stadium.  This Wisconsin team  played in the Rose Bowl last year for pete sake (I would say that's a pretty big game). 

A lot will come down to Cousins v Wilson.  And what I see is one QB that has been very accurate, confident and has the ability to run/alude defenders and open up his own pass lanes with his legs.  I see another who has stuggled, hasn't been accurate, and is more a pocket passer.  .

Thats nice and all, but who has MSU played? ND beat them soundly and only gave up 13 points. They beat a way over rated Mich squad. Wow. The big thing people are missing is.....Why is the #15 team in the nation with a top 5 defense getting so many points for a night home game.....Its not like this came out as Wisc -3 or a pk....

Theres 2 ways to look at every game.
