Most overrated team in the country?

The loss to OSU for USC was definitely a huge letdown.  They were embarrassed for A HALF being down 21-0 at halftime but eventually only lost by 7 points.  That being said, it's still unacceptable from the standpoint of USC and because of that, I don't think they should be in the NC or even in the top 5. 

And nobody expected anything from LSU or Florida?!?!  Florida and LSU were ranked 5th and 6th in the nation to start the season!  Both teams even had a couple 1st place votes for them after the first week of the season.  I'd say that people expected good things from them.

Finally, USC is not playing the best football in the nation right now.  Florida is and anybody who says otherwise is an idiot.  The problem I see is this thread was about the most "OVERRATED" team in the country and as I see it, USC is kinda right where they ought to be which is in the top 10 but not in the top 5. 

But from strictly a statistical standpoint, they have the #2 defense in the nation in yards given up (1st in scoring defense) and #14 offense in the nation in yards gained (14th in scoring offense).

If USC is the most overrated team in the country and are rated #6, im assuming everyone thinks the teams directly rated behind them are better? namely Utah, Penn St, Boise St, Ohio St... where should USC be ranked then?

Thinking this thru, after going back and forth, is this pattern that has emerged - not only do teams have peaks and valley's, but the conferences do as well. However, with regard to football, having Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Texas for example, in the top rankings, makes for teams like Mizzou and OK State, 2 loss teams, quite a bit closer than other 2 loss teams like Michigan State, TCU, Cincy or Pitt. The perception that they have to be better based on competition, is alive and well. However, and Boise State certainly comes to mind, many of these "lesser conference teams" have been known to win vs. the Goliath's, or most certainly give them a helluva run.

However, and I'm certain this is going to cause ire, I do believe the AP top 25 is fair.. or better yet, as fair as it can be. Frankly speaking, I'm probably in the minority with this, but I do not care to see a national championship in football. I think it creates better fodder for all to leave it a mystery - after all, what would be there to argue if we knew USC actually beat LSU for the championship?

I can not wait until the SEC Championship game.... I look for the line to be set high anyways if UF wins out, which they should.... After all the idiots bet it up another 3-7 points it will be like taking money from a baby...... ...... I look for close to 90% of the public to be on UF no matter what the line is.....Will ride Bama all the way to the bank......

As for the most overrated team, I would have to say LSU.......

Anyone who says Bama is just dumb..... They are undefeated and started at 24????

Personally, I don't want to go into this again because I've done this so many times with so many different people and it makes me look like a Pac-10 homer but until OOC scheduling is more universal, there's going to be too much conference parity going around. 
 
I took a look at the top 5 teams from the SEC, Big 12, and Pac-10 and looked at their OOC scheduling.  I think OOC scheduling done by the Big-12 and SEC creates this unfair bias as them being the supreme conference because their top teams have a better chance of getting into conference play with as many undefeated teams as possible.  And so it goes...
 
SEC Top 5 Teams (Florida, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina, Alabama): 20 OOC Games, 7 Big-6 Games, 4 Away Games
 
Big 12 Top 5 Teams (Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas, Oklahoma State, Missouri): 20 OOC Games, 5 Big-6 Games, 4 Away Games
 
Pac 10 Top 5 Teams (USC, Cal, Arizona, Oregon State, Oregon):
15 OOC Games, 7 Big-6 Games, 6 Away Games
 
I'm not trying to validate the Pac-10 as a great conference right now because I don't believe they are.  But I'm simply showing that the OOC scheduling gives the Big-12 and SEC an unfair advantage by scheduling so many home/inferior games to boost their overall W-L record, that they will more than likely have more ranked teams when their conference play starts, and therefore, have more big time BCS wins when they play their conference foes.

I think USC is going to get exposed when they play somebody in the top 10 who is not OSU, Boise State, or Utah.

USC is the Pac 10....Without them they would get no respect at all..... The SEC is getting better at scheduling good non conference games though.... Bama played what thought to be a top 10 Clemson team and have played Oklahoma 5 years ago, Auburn played West Virginia and has played USC in the past 5 years, Georgia going to Arizona St. this year, Arkansas played USC 2 years ago, Tennessee with UCLA and Cal..... So to say the SEC does not schedule big games is crazy and those are the ones I think of off the top of my head within this last few years... They are always in the top of the toughest schedule category....

OOC scheduling from time to time is not necessarily all cupcakes. Take a look at what Troy almost did to LSU Saturday. Or what Appalachian State did to Michigan last year. By and large you're right, but it's those every once in awhile's that make it interesting.

But, as we both know, there is no Nirvana here. Try being objective about any team or conference and put it together. Also, consider this, how much pressure is put on a team by the NCAA to get them to play a lesser team on the national stage? I don't have that answer, but I'd be willing to bet that it happens. I would very well imagine the NCAA's thinking, on occasion, is this: give a coach like Turner Gill at Buffalo  the chance to play Texas on Thursday night to get that kind of exposure for his recruiting efforts. The governing body of the NCAA has to wield some power over it - it's only human nature....

I have to say Ohio St.! Georgia on the other hand was and still is plague with key injuries so I can't write them off. Auburn & LSU don't have quality quarterbacks so I saw this coming! And USC needs to be in the BIG 12 so they can play better programs (Tex, Okl, Mizz..etc)!

Peter, Peter..  OOC Scheduling proves the Pac 10 is the better conference??  The Pac 10 has a losing record against the Mountain West brother.  This could go on for days and neither one of us will be sway.  I think one thing that we can both agree on is that it is time for a damn playoff in college football.  Then we could put all of this aside and know who TRULY is the best!

Not at all dtv001.  As you can see, I clearly state that I don't think the Pac-10 is a good conference.  I'm just stating that if we continue to use the BCS as a way to decide the national championship, OOC scheduling in general needs to be better regulated.  Trust me, the Big 12 and SEC are still the two premiere conferences in college football right now.

But of course, I'm all for an 8 team playoff at the end of the season.  Hopefully we can get Obama to make things happen on this because I don't know how much else he'll be able to accomplish.
