I respect the opinions of those favoring the under here but .
Has anyone been paying attention to what Larry Fedora and Bryn Renner are doing in Chapel Hill? For the first time in decades or maybe ever, the 'Heels have scrapped their pro-style run heavy offense for the "spread" and it's showing a lot of promise.
Carolina averaged over 10 more offensive plays per game in '12 over '11 and now Fedora predicts that UNC will join the 900+ offensive plays club in '13. Not only did UNC increase their offensive output LY but they averaged over 1 yard more per play and Brenner cut his INTs in half to 7 despite throwing 72 more passes in the previous season. Oh, and Brenner was very uncomfortable in the new system LY until the very end of the season as stats would support. In his last 4 games Brenner was 111-157 (71%), 1328 yards (332 ypg.), 11 TDs, and just 2 int.
Well Brenner now says that he feels that he now can play by reaction instead of having to try and think about everything before he makes a play. I think that Renner is the best QB to ever play at UNC and I predict a 3600 yard-36 TD type of season for him.
I loved Giovanni Bernard and he will be missed, but UNC has 2 backs that fit this offense perfectly. Romar Morris can fly and A.J. Blue is a good receiver and like Bernard should have a good YAC rating. Carolina will also be ok at WR and O-line.
On the defensive side is where I have some question marks for the Tarheels. For the first time in decades the D line is only average and although there is a ton of athleticism and potential at LB, they are unproven. They should be fine in the secondary with four very productive starters returning.
The fifteen lost scholarships could eventually take their toll on the depth in Chapel Hill before the season is over but should not be a factor in this game. I am strongly leaning to UNC and the over here.
Even though I would love to see the 'Cocks represent the SEC and start the season strong with a decisive victory here, this game makes me very nervous as an outright Tarheel victory would not be terribly surprising to me.
