Welcome back to Football season! It's been a long 9 months. I'll make separate posts per conference as far as my picks go.
Let's start with the SEC...STARTING NOW!
Florida A&M @ Arkansas:
Cupcake. Welcome to big boy football, FAMU. Not even close. No ifs, and's, or but's.
PREDICTION: Arkansas 59, Florida A&M 0
Michigan @ Florida:
This is one of the two premier matchups to open the season (the other one being FSU-Bama). It'll likely be Wilton Speight against Feleipe' Franks, more than likely.
For the first time in years, I am quite optimistic about the Gators' QB competition this year. I really feel that they might finally be putting the pieces together on offense, as their offensive line is fully developed and experienced, and much of the line returns. I feel that the Gators' defense will still be exceptional, so don't expect a major drop-off.
Of course, this was last season, but Wilton Speight looked horrible against Florida State's maligned defense. He was constantly under pressure and never had time to throw. Don't be surprised if Florida causes the same type of trouble here.
Noteworthy to mention, Michigan lost almost its entire defense to either graduation or the NFL draft.
I really feel that Florida has enough of a team to get this big win over Michigan. It'll be a close, grindstone nail-biter, but Florida will get enough done on offense, taking advantage of an extremely young Michigan defense and will shut the door defensively late. Franks could very well be the savior for the Gators.
PREDICTION: Florida 28, Michigan 23
App State @ Georgia
I wouldn't call this quite a premier matchup, but it's certainly one to watch. App State darn near upset Tennessee to open last season, and they've always had good teams. I just think Georgia is too loaded for App State to get anything done here. The Mountaineers will hang around until the end of the 3rd quarter, where Georgia will take over.
PREDICTION: Georgia 38, App State 13
South Alabama @ Ole Miss:
Allegation after Allegation after Allegation. Ole Miss' bitter rival Mississippi State lost their opening game against this same team last year, and with how much trouble the Rebels are in, I'll go ahead and take Ole Miss but BARELY.
PREDICTION: Ole Miss 27, South Alabama 20
Vanderbilt @ Middle Tennessee:
In state teams always compete to the grindstone and have epic games. I'm digging for Vanderbilt but in a shootout.
PREDICTION: Vanderbilt 48, Middle Tennessee 41
BYU vs. LSU
I'm really excited to see the new LSU offense under Matt Canada. Goodbye to the I-formation and hello to the much more modern shotgun spread.
LSU's newly implemented perimeter running and passing game, along with the pre-snap shifting will penetrate pretty much everyone (well, except Alabama) this season. I don't think this game will ever be close.
LSU's defense will remain exceptional as well.
PREDICTION: LSU 41, BYU 10
Texas A&M @ UCLA:
I see an early season upset here. Well, I wouldn't even call this an upset, as the Aggies darn near dropped this game a season ago at Kyle field.
UCLA will control the game offensively and will slam the door on defense late.
PREDICTION: UCLA 31, Texas A&M 17
Tennessee @ Georgia Tech:
I'm interested to see how the SEC (besides Georgia) fares against the Jackets' flex-bone option attack. I'm reluctant to pick Tennessee due to their known holes on defense, but I think they have the slight edge in defense over Tech. Another nail biter, but Tennessee will hang on in a shootout.
PREDICTION: Tennessee 38, Georgia Tech 35
