The onside kick

I know you have to be ready for anything but does anyone think that was kind of a cheap way to "turn the tide" for lack of a better term?  And how about the kick return right after that?  I think if Alabama doesn't recover that onside kick they don't win the game, and the kick went in exactly the right spot where there was no Clemson player.  It seemed a little cheap to do something like that to win the game.

Definitely NOT a cheap way to turn the tide. Even if it didn't work, it changes the team's mentality on the way the game is going. It's a wake up action for both sides. When done properly, the momentum shift can be game changing. If the onside kick is used when they are up by 21, that's a different story. But even then, it's part of the game and you've got to be ready for anything, especially in the college football championship game.

When FSU had a kick off return and converted a fake punt to beat Auburn, was that a cheap way to win?

No but I still think it was sort of a cheap way to win, kind of a gimmick play.  I'll call it lucky.  I was watching the game, and I have no real emotional interests or ties to either team, and when Alabama did that it felt like a stomach punch, and I'm not a player or coach or anything at all.

When Clemson pulled a fake punt in a pivotal spot in the game vs Oklahoma, was that considered cheap too?

Fake punts are lucky and a bad way to stay in a game as well

That stomach punch feeling you felt is exactly why it's not a gimmick play. It's part of the sport. It's a momentum changer. Having these types of plays in one's offensive arsenal can help you win games. 
I see where you're coming from, but I respectively disagree on your take. 
You've gotta be ready for anything, sometimes one play can help change the outcome of a game. This was just one of many, but because it was a seldom used play, it sticks out big time.

Cheap? Lol. That is what separates a great coach and PHUCKING amazing great coach. I was on Clemson, but hands down nick Saban is one of the best coaches ever. Always ready to figure it out and always has another plan if the first one isn't working. And that's what he did. He changed the plan and it changed the whole game. He's genius.

Saban is not know for gimmick plays or going for it very often on 4th down, trust me saban knew the probability was high based on how Clemson lined up on kickoffs during this game and the previous games, it's called COACHING

Saban is a great recruiter and a pretty good coach too.  People want to go to Kentucky for basketball and Alabama for football.  For some reason these two schools draw amazing talent to their teams.

Thats just silly. Cheap?  Just because it went perfectly and wouldn't happen that well again 9 times out of 10 doesn't mean it was a cheap way to change the game. Its part of the game and it isn't even as if it were a questionable call.

One of the best plays in NCAAF Championship history. That coming from a guy rooting for Clemson last night.

Cheap, not at all.  Lucky, well, recovering an onside kick is tough and generally a low % play, so yes, probably a little lucky. But in hindsight it was a brilliant move because A) Clemson was not prepared for it at all and B) Because it did work, it changed the momentum in the game.

But just because they were fortunate enough to have this play work, I would not say it makes Bama "lucky" to win.  It was a well timed risk Saban took and it cashed perfectly for Bama.

I don't remember anyone saying Saints coach Sean Peyton was lucky or that the onside kick that swung the momentum to his team when they beat the Colts in the Super Bowl was cheap.

Guarantee Saban saw something on film and knew when the time was right to use it. Nothing lucky or cheap about being smart.

felt the same way when Pittsburg defeated Dallas. then I graduated hs.
but now it is the strategy of football, surprised it took Clemson so long to try one
Iwas sure it was coming with 4 min left but they waited till they had 19 secs before they kicked it out of bounds.

When the QB uses play action (that means he fakes a hand off - and then throws a pass), I suppose that is also "unfair" or maybe a cheap way of gaining and advantage?

I am also sick and tired of Alabama winning, and Saban basking in the glory.  But I am realistic as well.  Saban out-coached the other sideline last night.  He pulled the trigger in the VERY BEST play of the day, and it worked because they prepared for that and practiced it.

Alabama is the best team, and Saban is the best coach in NCAAF - his onside kick play was the perfect play at that time.  Congrats.

Agree with the OP it just feels cheap, but I don't like onside kick in any situation.  10 yards is not far enough with the speed of today's players, and the receiving team are just sitting ducks -  11 players to cover a 50x70 yard space. The kicking team has a running start and knows where the ball is going.  

Agree Saban is the best coach but it was clear last night Bama was not the better team - they were definitely the healthier team. If Alexander had not left the game Clemson may have embarrassed them in the second half.
