Apparently, Iowa State has resumed practice after the flooding, and the defense is looking good:
Ames, Ia. — Iowa State’s young defense got the best of a veteran offense during a 150-play scrimmage Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium — and that’s no misprint.
A defense that returns only five starters — none at linebacker — played better than an offense that returns starters at nearly every position.
“We flew around and made plays,” defensive end Rashawn Parker said after his first full scrimmage since missing most of last season because of knee surgery. “We forced some turnovers.”
Too many turnovers if you’re Tom Herman, the offensive coordinator.
“Way too many dropped balls,” Herman said after the closed workout. “That was not a great display out there. That was something we’ve been bitten with throughout training camp, but boy, everybody had the bug (Saturday). We’re not good enough to overcome ourselves.
“Along with the offensive penalties – we were in too many second-and-long, third-and-long situations.”
The drops weren’t bad enough, though, to alarm coach Paul Rhoads, who was satisfied with the corps’ veterans.
