Publics perception is the Ducks are pertained to be a Finesse team only yea why isn't anyone talking about the "Ducks Defense" & what they possibly might do in this particular game?
Why would the Duck's defense be good in this particular game? They haven't been good all year. They have been average. They also have not played a team with close to the offensive firepower OSU has. OSU has also played far superior teams defensively and still put up Offensive #'s similar to Oregon.
They have scored 2.2 ppg less than Oregon while while playing 5 top 25 scoring defenses. #6, #7, #14, #17 and #22 Mich state.
Oregon by contrast has only scored 2.2 ppg more than OSU by playing 4 TOP 50 scoring defenses. #2 Stanford and #22 Mich State, #42 Utah and #49 FSU.
Oregon's rush Defense is ranked #49 vs the run in the country while playing only 3 teams in the top 50 in rushing, the highest ranked being #20 MSU. OSU ranked 9th in the rush offense while playing 5 top 25 rush defenses including 3 of the top 5.
Oregon's defense ranks 108th vs the pass. They did play some good pass offenses, although it could be said, that the Pac was so bad defensively that their #'s are inflated. Oregon played #1 WSU, #6 Cal, #14 FSU, #21 Arizona 2X. The Pac had only 1 team in the top 25 in pass defense #8 Stanford. Oregon ranked #50 in pass efficiency defense, decent but not great. Now they are without their best player too. OSU was 51st in passing yards and 2nd in the country in pass efficiency. They also rank 18th in the country in yards per completion at 14.2 ypc. They are 25th in Completion %.When OSU throws the ball, they are effective. They just don't do it as much as other teams because of their dominating run game. Again OSU posted those #'s vs better pass defenses than Oregon including #4 Wisconsin, # 8PSU, #19 Minnesota, and #20 Michigan in Pass yards allowed. And #2 PSU, # 14 VT, and #22 MSU in Pass efficiency defense.
Oregon was 27th in the country in scoring defense. A lot of that has to do with them being +20 in turnover margin, not because they stop anybody.
If Oregon is going to win the game, they need turnovers. If they can't stop OSU from running, which there is no evidence that they can statistically. They will need fumbles. The media hype is actually more slanted to how Oregon is NOT a finesse team anymore. I am not concerned if they are or not. The fact is, their defense has not been very good this year DESPITE being bigger and more physical. They haven't played a dynamic proven offense like OSU all year and have been mediocre statistically still. Where is the evidence that they can even slow them down? They didn't FSU and this team is far worse matchup with the run game.
