Would they have one the game without that absolute pressure or, even more importantly, would they have cared as much about winning and losing?
Hypothetical questions for sure, but if there were a 4 team playoff this year, the remaining one loss teams that don't get in (ie....Baylor, Oklahoma State, Ohio State (if they lose to Michigan State) would all be bitching about getting slighted in favor of "a one loss Alabama team that couldn't even win a division of their own conference" As playoff proponents will find out, as long as people are involved in the subjective selection of teams for a playoff, you will always have questions if the right teams were selected.......just as we currently do with the BCS.
I think the BCS is a terrible system. I do think that OSU should absolutely be subject to the same criteria that Mountain West/WAC/Fill in the Non-BCS Conference. If not, why do they even play Div 1 football? I know realistically 95% of teams probably don't have a realistic chance of winning a national title. But isn't the point of playing the season to find out who is deserving of an attempt at playing for it?
SOS should be compiled and graded regardless of conference affiliation. It's tough to determine if a team is worthwhile of a title shot considering they have no control over the quality of other teams within their conference, in addition to the quality of their non conference as well. Let's not forget that a lot of these non conference games are scheduled some time in advance. I don't know when OSU scheduled their trip to Cal this season, but it might have been when Tedford had them relevant in the national picture. I have no idea, maybe someone has more insight into that.
I just think that every team should be held to the same criteria and if that means your conference had a down year or is sub par than too bad. I'm sure Boise and Utah would have loved shots at national titles but weren't deserving according to the powers that be. The rules shouldn't change because OSU plays in a pre determined BCS conference. Remember when the Big East was terrible and really wasn't deserving of any kind of special treatment?
Thankfully this is the last year of this non sense. I'm ok with a fifth, one loss team, being left out the playoff. They had their chance and didn't run the table. I don't necessarily think OSU should be left out of the title chase solely based on schedule. Like I said before, the system is terrible. No one should be left out of a title chance even though they went undefeated. That's the most you can ask of a team. However, if precedent has been set before on teams with weak SOS (and again, I haven't done any research on anyone's SOS. For all I know, OSU might actually have a better SOS than FSU/AUB/Mizzou. Just a disclaimer) than it shouldn't be changed this year.
