Target RBs and WRs early, especially RB if it's a standard scoring league.
You cant wait on QB if you want. There's quality depth with guys like Big Ben, Matt Ryan, Matthew Stafford, and plenty of others. So if you don't get an elite QB then don't panic.
You can also wait on TE. In fact, you can wait damn near forever to draft a TE. There's never been depth at the position like this year. Guys like Jarad Cook and Aaron Hernandez aren't in most top 12s at TE but could prove nice starting options. Tons of other high upside guys as well.
Take a kicker in the last round and last round only. No exceptions ever. Wait till the late rounds to take a defense as well. And never draft a backup kicker or defense.
There's a fantasy thread on here about fantasy sleepers. Quite a few good late round fliers mentioned there. A few I like are: Denarius Moore Earl Bennett: especially in PPRs A. Brown/E. Sanders: one will blow up in Pitt; not sure which one right now D. Carter: Addai never stays healthy Burleson: obviously not some young guy or new name, but Stafford threw to him a lot in preseason & nobodys drafting him
Hope you enjoy playing fantasy and have a good first year

I agree with everything blstuart said. Make sure your LAST pick is your K and also wait until the end to grab a DEF; don't draft a back up at either spot and I would add not to draft a backup TE either. You need to fill your roster with RB and WR because each fantasy team has to start more than 1 so there will be less of them available. During bye weeks you can always find a filler for K, DEF, and TE (even QB if you have a top guy).
Drafting at #3 I would grab Peterson, Foster or Rice whoever is left out of those 3; you could take Charles as well but I like the other 3 more in my opinion. On the way back, try and grab one of the top WR and another RB unless you want to grab one of the top QB but like blstuart said you could wait an extra round (even two or three) and still end up with a guy like Romo, Big Ben, Schaub, Freeman, etc. Everyone has there preference but if you follow these simple steps your team should end up fine.
Print out a top 200 sheet (can find one on ESPN, yahoo, or CBS), take a look at team depth charts and highlight all the starting RB and WR that you like and cross out the names as they get picked.

thanks for the info i will take that into consideration i originaly was sold on vick for my first round pick, but the more research i do the more im changing my mind the strategy u have listed here seems much more sound and logical, we also have to draft defensive players opposed to just selecting a team in this league when should i look to aquire them much later im assuming, most likely fill my starting RB WR QB and then look for them?
i know the basics im an avid sports bettor just never got into the fantasy aspect seems like a hole new world, haha we got 12 guys $100 buy in so i plan on giving them a run for the money
