Been cycling for two weeks.  Love this bicycling.  Instant sweat !!
 
My problem is I have a Mountain bike and the ten speed dudes in the spandex don't wave back to me when I wave at them
 
What is the deal?

And what is the purpose of the head to toe spandex?
 
Wind drag?  Speed?  Fashion?
 
I'm over here on a Mountain bike with a bag of bricks on my back for a workout.
 
At least I look normal.

Shrimp, I've been biking for years over here in Europe and there is a very good reason for the snub. Mountain bikes are for off-road, and road bikes are for .....well the road. People who ride MB's on the road are detested by racers. They are downright dangerous. Also there is a obvious distinct advantage in climbing with a MB. The MB's usually have 3 rings and the normal road bike two, and those are geared differently.

What we see on our weekly Sunday excursions are loads of poorly dressed slobs riding MB's in packs, doing about 20 KPH slower, clogging up the safe riding lanes.When you are riding in a nice line, drafting off each other, and you have to slow down and maneuver around poorly disciplined, slow MB riders it causes some (ok a lot) of anger.

MB's aren't designed to be on a highway, just like you wouldn't take a road bike on a MB course. Is there some snobbery involved??? Some "class warfare"???? Sure that is a big part of it as well.

As far as the spandex goes, there are a few good reasons for that. Like you said, it is for the speed, wind resistance and above all, to look good. But a serious reason is to dissipate the sweat quickly, keeping the body's cooling system working at a high level. I mean when you do a 200 k ride, you don't want to be wearing jeans.

I'm going slow and wearing a tee shirt.  In two weeks these spandex weirdos are gonna get the non tee shirt look though.
 
What's up with all the stupid logos on the spandex?

"Light Weight" is not workout material.  I'm throwing bricks and shit in a pack on top of me.

I gotta tell ya, this mountain bike cycling is GOOD SHIT
 
Have become absolutely addicted to this.  I take the bike everywhere now.  Need to go grocery shopping?  No problem, just pile on around 50 pounds of food in backpack.  Case of beer and some dead chickens.  No problem.  Makes the workout even better.
 
A month ago, could barely get up a hill, now just chew them up with weight on the back.
 
It's awesome for you workout guys.  Can do low or high intensity, either way.

Yeah, these "racing" cyclists think they are the shit.  They get all poodled up in these insane spandex outfits.
 
  Somebody forgot to tell them that the Sun's Ultraviolet rays do not penetrate plastic clothing and they look like zombies or something.
 
And the footwear looks like some type of ballet shoe footwear.

For real, if they need to wear head to spandex for some reason, can't they just go with a solid color.  Black, blue, whatever but all these Doritos logos all over their body just looks stupid.
 
Sure, Lance Armstrong and the professionals have sponsors and are PAID to wear those logos.  They wouldn't do it for free????

Actually I am thinking about buying a hybrid.  No spandex please.  I'm not looking for speed or style points, just a workout.  The area i live in has some rolling hills and I want to hit em.

Would recommend that highly, highly, highly

Aside from being able to basically walk outside and get some quick cardio 24/7, they are actually a blast to ride.  I just bee bop around town on it now. 

You get checked out by chicks as well  and when you are playing in traffic you are a few feet higher than the cars and look in on everything. 

Great way to change a workout routine.

Oh, I got a head nod from a Harley guy on a badass custom chopper yesterday.

Still not making any friends with the ten speed racing dudes though.

I'm half on the sidewalk, half on the street right now.

Prices on the bikes are all over the board.  I just got a $300 bike and love it but now a month into it, I would get a bike from a real bike shop vs a large box sports store so they can make sure it's tuned in properly.
 
Chains will skip and fall off when grinding up a hill if it's not tuned up properly.  A bought mine at a large sports store but I hang out at the bike shop now and they clean/lube the chain and stuff but feel guilty for not buying the bike there.
 
Get some decent sized wheels/tires so you don't have to worry about curbs and potholes and make sure the bike is comfortable.  My handle bars are kinda high which I like so not all hunched over.
 
I rode this fucker about 15 miles on Saturday ..... went to the mall to buy socks on the bike. 
 
Oh, and get a lock.  Apparently they get stolen all the time.

I am not a  "cyclist" not sure what defines one, but I bought a nice racing bike last year at this time for the first time in 10 years. I get to ride here and there and I see what Mr. Win is saying.
 
I finally want to ride in central park because its just perfect for riding...
 
Just gotta lug my bike on the train or something,...
 
Cycling is fun and its a great workout.
 
Side note, I paid aabout 400-500 for mine...was on sale from 1k...but its lightweight and great. I just wish i had amore comfortable seat cause my muscles and butt area hurt after a long ride

I used to wonder about the whole spandex thing myself.  Then I experienced the whole raw crotch problem and sore ass issue and now I wear spandex with a little padding in the ass.  It actually helps.  But I agree that all the chip sponsers and what not are ridiculous. 

My spandex is all black.  It makes me look tough.  That and the pistol I carry with me when I ride.

Yeah, I hopped on a "road" bike the other day and now understand the spandex and padding.  It's like riding on a piece of rebar.

I got caught in the rain cycling yesterday
 
Was caught up in the moment and ventured too far from home with scattered showers on the radar.
 
Bikes hardly fit in cars so hard to call a friend for a ride.  Pretty dangerous stuff
