What I always thought was odd about referring to someone who isn't "white" as "colored" is the fact that "black" actually isn't a color. Black is formed due to the absence of color, except for dealing with paints. Just thought it was kinda funny.
Jerson - you're an educated fellow(lawyer I believe). Do you think "colored" is an acceptable term in today's society?

it's 2010. So far you've referenced an organization established in 1909 and your neighborhood in the early 80s as to when the term was acceptable. In today's society your term isn't accepted as much and offends many(Plz understand people wouldn't that the people who are offended are so b/c it's not an acceptable term anymore and the people who laugh when you use it do so b/c it's not an acceptable term anymore). If you can't understand this concept then I'm not sure what more to say. It used to be commonplace to use many terms that aren't acceptable today but MOST people adapt.
True. Where I live now (South Dakota) diversity involves more American Indians than any other race. Most "Indians" do not like being called "Native Americans" or "Natives." They think that is derogatory. They prefer to be called by their tribe, such as "Sioux" around here, "Lakota," or just plain "Indians." I guess bottom line is that if someone finds how you refer to anothers race as derogatory then change it, unless I guess you mean what you say as derogatory.
I have been called pretty much every name in the book the two years I lived in DC and enjoyed playing pick up basketball games and as long as it is in good fun I don't care. BOL!

Well lets put it this way. It just is ripe with negative connotation. I never once used that term personally. It just seems like damn close to the two "n" words. I would venture to guess that a southerner might be even more offened, especially in print because you cannot hear how the person said the word and probably will remember many times that word being used quite derogatory.
So in other words, I will never use it. Frankly, if I must refer to someones race I must admit I will use the term "African American" or "black."

"Colored" just seems like you are saying that something is wrong with that person. Just for the record, I am not so sure CrowKillers meant anything by it.

I definately see what you are saying. It doesn't help though you have people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton refer to themselves as "colored" people too. Sure not with a negative hint to it, but most "white" people who have not had honest conversations with non-white people do not know what to say without offending someone.

I agree. He's been told that its offensive by a few people so that should be enough for him to update his vocabulary to the 21st century. Again, to each there own but every time he says he uses it b/c naacp or b/c he grew up in the projects just makes me lose respect for him. I wonder what he'd call Jewish folks and Blacks if he grew up in south in a family that had a history in the KKK. He'd then justify it by saying that's how he grew up I guess.

Who , Where, and When did anyone tell me to "Update" my vocabulary? And why is it offensive?
I am 100% SURE that almost ALL of you guys out there use another term for "Blacks".....
WTF is wrong with saying Colored"???
I give up. Please continue using outdated offensive words b/c you grew up in the projects and an organization formed over 100 years ago used the term.
I will leave you with this. When you fill out paperwork for a job or taxes does it mention colored anywhere? If you feel comfortable using a term that offends many I can't stop you. Have you ever seen "coloreds only" or read any history prior to 1977 where this was used strictly in a derogatory manner? Those questions were more rhetorical than anything b/c you've decided you're right no matter what so no use discussing.
Either way best of luck going forward.

Also fwiw I HATE the name Washington "Redskins" b/c I know that term is VERY offensive to many. I can't keep people from saying it but I don't agree with it. Once several groups came out and let it be known how offensive it was to them, and for good reason, I think it should've been changed. Might not be as bad as the Tomahawk Chop in Atl but either way just wanted to point this out as I'm not just trying to call you out for your offensive term.

We all have a time when we take one big shot... tonight is mine. I'm firing every penny I have from all 8 of my sportbooks account, a little over $5700... Phillies/Giants over 6.
This line is way to low... time to take advantage of that no hitter and pick up 5 dimes!
I hate to be a hater and you have my sincere congratulations, but I think maybe you ought to seriously consider Gamblers Anonymous.
That was a stupid thing to do. A really stupid thing. Its moves like that get people into deep trouble. Gambling is great if you can do it in moderation but if you don't have the discipline to exercise proper money management, you might be headed to a not very fun place.
I don't want to sound like a hater or a know-it-all but I think that was a mistake and you should really think about what made you do it.

1. No one is looking for sympathy.
2. If me disagreeing with the team name Redskins makes you all of a sudden disagree with my initial point then you understand how ignorant that makes you?
3. I find it funny that people come and and try to make points like this but wouldn't have the balls to tell crow that maybe just maybe he was wrong.
4. For what it's worth adding in the Redskin and tomahawk comment might have been a little overkill but it is how I feel. I don't pick a certain race, color, creed and defend ignorance against them and then wash my hands of other ignorant stuff. Also, fwiw, in ~900 posts I've never mentioned it before.
5. Either way, like most here, you've decided that you're right so there is no reason to keep discussing b/c you are incapable of opening your mind to another perspective.
6. I will leave it at "you're right"(whatever you want that to be) so you don't feel the need to continue calling me 4th grade names.

Jelax, you are a very strange fellow. It seems that you are arguing, quite persistently, to defend something that you see to be morally wrong but you don't care to explain why. By that I mean, you say it is dated as if something dated is always the lesser of two options, and you say it is offensive but from my understanding he has not blatantly offended anyone. If you are offended just by reading the word then why be on the internet? Its just a word, you only build it up by making it a big deal.
Also, for an "objective" reader, you seem to show a lot of bias. (i.e. point 1 taking the use of sympathy out of context; point 2 which shows a complete lack of comprehension of the post; point 3 seems completely counterintuitive that you feel it is right for you to say that the use of a word is wrong etc)
I will say though, I would never use the word colored in the context being discussed.
