Advice about moving to Nevada

I'm moving to Nevada for full-time sportsbook access and was curious about the different areas. I've been to Vegas a ton and its great for a week at a time, but I'm not so sure it'd be a great place to live. Does anybody have any insight on places like Laughlin, Reno, Carson City, etc? I was thinking it'd be nice to live near Tahoe, possibly even in California, but don't know how far it would be to the nearest book.
 
Also curious about the odds in the non-Vegas areas, i.e. how quick are they available and whether there is another book in Nevada that is both as quick and detailed as the Hilton's lines. I've been at some Stations casinos in Vegas and it can be frustrating as hell when they don't offer added games until Wednesday or don't offer totals until late in the week.
 
Any feedback from posters or moderators is much appreciated

So, you are moving to Vegas strictly to have access to Sportsbooks??  Are you planning to try to bet on sports as a profession??

Primarily, yes. I have enough experience, bankroll, and discipline to give it an honest shot and I'm at a point in my life where I need a change of scenery anyway. I had a good local for awhile that fizzled, and I'd rather stay away from the online books.
 
I'd love to find a book in Nevada that is as good as the Hilton's, but I honestly have no idea if one is available outside of the LV Hilton. Do you or anyone know if a book of similar betting options and promptness of lines/totals exists in Nevada outside of Vegas? I guess if I had to I could move to Vegas and just get a place far enough away from the fantasy land of the Strip, but preferable only as a last resort.

You want to live in the middle of the desert so you can bet on sports professionaly?

you are making a HUGE mistake. YOu will get eaten alive by the sportsbooks. TRUST ME. It is NOW WAY TO MAKE A LIVING. Thank me later

RickeM.. 2 million people live in the Las Vegas metro area in middle of the desert, so its obviously not just the strip and then tumbleweed there . I've been to Vegas about 15 times in my life for a week to 2 at a time, so I know how hot it can be too. I don't plan on sitting out in the sun 8 hours a day in July or running marathons in August. Its honestly no worse than the summer heat and humidity where I'm from anyway.
 
And I did not ask anyone whether I should "live to the desert so I can bet on sports professionally". I'm not looking for anyone's approval here, and don't care what your ignorant logic tells you. I've thought about this for years, and have prepared plenty. The question(s) that I actually asked were for people's advice on the other areas of Nevada besides Vegas and what the quality of the books were. That's all.

I just have to make this clear. I did not wake up a week ago and say, "gee, I think I'll move to Nevada and bet on them there sports games for a living". I've been doing this for the better part of a decade and the only diffference between what I've been doing locally and Nevada would be paying the juice up front. I have the bankroll to sustain myself for quite a long time and can manage money as well as anybody. Like I said before, I've been to Vegas plenty and done the 24 hour bender routine on the Strip. I have no desire to do that again. This is not an impulse, escape-from-anything type move. Im responsible to nobody but myself right now, and will always have this in the back of my mind if I don't do it, so I'm going for it.

Move to Truckee -- short drives to both Reno and Tahoe.  Golf in the spring/summer.  Skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Or even one of the Sacramento suburbs and drive a little further to get to those places

The best place to bet sports is the Las Vegas Hilton....almost as good as betting off-shore. The Belligio and MGM are good too, but the Hilton is the best.

Stay at the Marriot Residence Inn just outside of the strip over the bridge. Very nice place with full kitchen an all amenities. Just try it for a week and see how it all goes. Not a good idea to commit all the way to Vegas 1st go round.
Small steps..

peterosewins - you sound sincere - so a little bit of advice in the form of questions:
 
Why would you lay -110 in Nevada when you should be laying -102 online?
 
How do you think you will be able to get the best number available in Nevada when you physically have to be somewhere to bet?  This is a little bit different than shopping 10 lines online in 1 minute.
 
What size bets do you plan on making?
 
What sports do you plan on betting, and what bets on those sports?
 
 
If you cant tell my opinion on the subject by now, I am a strong believer in getting the best line at the best price possible.  In fact, this alone is the sole determinant for success as a pro.  Right away, you are giving away a ton of money, even if you are a winner - you are winning far less in Nevada than online.
 
Add to that the ridiculously low limits in Nevada (try to bet a MLB total for more than a dime) and the logistics of carrying around cash and running from place to place - and I honestly cant think of a single reason to bet in Nevada as a pro.  I dont think true pros are in Vegas anymore - and if they are and are not playing online - they are simply giving money away.
 
Good luck with whatever you choose - and if you are doing this for a nice place to move - fine -but if you are doing this with the intentions of making a living you are going about it the wrong way.

I had a great local  for awhile that took just about everything, so I never really had a reason to go online (honestly, I feel a bit better knowing I've built as much as I did getting that -110 vs. -102). I've done preliminary/casual research online and (I plead ignorance here) I've been a little sketched out at times about the possibility of either my deposits not getting through, or more importantly my withdrawals not clearing b/c of the whole UIGEA fiasco, regardless of the struggles to implement its regulations. The BetJamaica ATM card was the only thing I saw in my limited research that seemed like a reasonable way to go.    ?
 
I range my plays from an absolute minimum of a nickel to 5 dimes (certain occasions higher), the value depending on my researched opinion of where lines should be vs. where they are. My sports are, in order: NCAA BB, NCAA FB, NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, Soccer, everything else. The type of bet (O/U, halves, team totals, etc..) is irrelevant to me, as long as it works with my numbers.
 
I am certainly not heart set on settling on Vegas. I'd prefer not to, hence my reasoning for finally signing up here and starting this thread. But circumstances will force me to make a decision in the next few months, and I'll do what I have to do to get started and do further research on where to go next. I truly do appreciate and value insight, advice, or suggestion you or anyone else can offer, especially regarding the online industry

I don't mean ignorant in the sense of being an ass. I meant ignorant as in assuming I wasn't "prepared" for such a move. Apologies if it was taken the other way

First off, you will not be able to get 5K down in one shot consistently anywhere in vegas on some of those sports you list.  Certainly not totals.  Try betting 5k in vegas on soccer - impossible.  

All I can say is do some research about betting online.  If you are willing to move to Nevada, there are much easier steps to take to setting up yourself online.  It is totally legal for an American to set up a bank account overseas - and the UIGEA does not apply to a bank account in the Bahamas or anywhere else. 

I bet much more than you and wouldnt think about betting in vegas.  I get anything I want down online.

And if you are happy and proud you made as much as you did at -110, you still would have made MUCH MORE at -102.  Take my word on this one.  For some reason this is where most people dont want to listen - but the key determinant to you being able to be successful as a pro is betting the best line at the best price as much as you can - and you cant do this on foot in Nevada.

I would have loved to be getting the -102 for the past 9 years. Any sort of pride is kept in check by knowing how much more I would have right now if I knew about that option.

I will certainly learn as much as I can about going online, though I feel like I'm about to start reading page 1 of an encyclopedia. Based off your suggestions, my biggest questions going into this are:

What is the process for withdrawing/depositing money from an overseas bank account? Is it as simple as using an ATM card just with higher fees?

How do you know which banks are reputable?

Is there absolutely no governmental interference with such a situation?

These questions may seem elementary, but it's honestly where I'm at right now in my online knowledge. Thanks again for any help

pinny?   trading at matchbook?

i live in US so cant get pinny.

regarding matchbook, I've heard some iffy things.  some say there isn't much of an advantage with the low juice because they get it back in other ways.

Van, as usual, has the best angle on this........considering you state your move to Nev. being for gambling purposes. Before online betting, your local & Nevada were the only choices & 10% was the norm. Having dealt with Pinnacle for 4 years, it's a no-brainer............if I felt I wanted to make a living trying to gamble, I'd have to to have access to a sight like that. I've gotten +106-+110 lines there when hitting the # on the turn. Or I've sold pts. to get +120 when I felt great about a play.......something you won't see anywhere else. Not saying all those plays were winners but it's imperative to have the choice.

Yeah, I gotta' say that I know a number of people in Vegas and most of them play online.  Mostly Matchbook and they have Pinny accounts they are doing a round about with. Better odds on almost everything
 
They will use the locals for somethings, but it's only about 15% of the time. Also don't forget that some games you won't even be able to wager on by living in Nevada.

aside from the gambling part, RENT DO NOT BUY in Las Vegas. worst RE market in the world. No water, one of the largest RE bubbles in USA, and our country about to enter MAJOR depression, i'd say take your cash, use half of it to buy physical gold, and take the rest and move up to Canada, rent a place, and open up a pinny acct and a matchbook acct.

Vanzack....great comments as usual. Your knowledge on the ends and outs is incredible. Tell me in your opinion what the top five off shore books are. I am with Bet Jamaica right now, Pinnacle still closed to US right? Also, you said it is not illegal to open a bank account in another country. What's a couple of  banks you would recommend. Thanks (Learning a lot).
