you should definitely go to a nice wine store and ask for help. that's their job. they will help you. tell them what you're serving, how many wine drinkers you have, and what you want to spend. they will hook it up.
If you want a decent, but cheap wine, get the Trumpeter Malbec. should run about 8.99 and it regularly outdrinks $20+ bottles.

Depends on if the people coming over are wine snobs. You would be amazed at the number of wine snobs I fool with the bag in the box wine. They have no freaking idea. A good number of your house wines when you go out come out of the boxes.
But I don't go bottom of the line. The Black Box wines are best.
Stay away from those 5 litre boxes. Grape juiced fermented for 45 days. When your wine has an expiration date..beware.

wine snobbery is hilarious. There was a "wine tasting" where they invited experienced wine reviewers and gave them a glass of white wine to review. then they gave them the SAME white wine with a red dye in it to make it look like red wine. Not one of them caught it and they all reviewed it differently. https://scienceblogs.com/cortex/2007/11/the_subjectivity_of_wine.php?source=rss_feed
in the same article, they gave tasters the same wine in a bottle with a fancy label and a table-wine label. they rated the one with the fancy label better than the table-wine label. IT WAS THE SAME WINE.
