Good stuff guys. Thanks. I would spend $50ish a bottle if I thought it was worth it. I guess I should have mentioned that I would also like to impress any wine drinking guests (within reason of course)
you'd do better with a $30ish bottle that they've never heard of from your local wine shop. seriously, go to a wine shop and ask for help. they will help you and give you exactly what you're looking for

First is around $13 - 18 and the Seghesio is around $20
Both will do your dinner party proud
7 Deadly is very good.
I usually end up paying a little less than $20 for a bottle. But you can get some very good deals from the Wine Clubs. If you get on thier rotation, those $20 bottles end up costing you less than $10.
I will keep a box of Black box wine in the fridge if I don't want to crack open a bottle.

I don't think you need to go that crazy. BTW, if you have a warehouse club in your area, that's the way to go. They undercut everyone on price. My local Sams and Cosco has very nice selections and great price. The Sams has all the more expensive wines together and you end up paying about 1/3 less than the other places.

Non-wine-drinkers usually prefer lighter reds, like a Pinot Noir....
However, with those meats, I would suggest a solid California Zinfandel....and ALWAYS from Paso Robles....there are many excellent vineyards in Paso with a wide $$$ range to choose from.

Good call: Ridge, Peachy Canyon, Turley, Norman. Yum.

Most folks who are not wine experts will not know the difference between a $10-$12 bottle and a $20-$30 bottle. Bogle make some decent wines that nobody will complain about.
Even if they don't know why, most wine drinkers will know what food goes with what wine so just google "what wine goes with xxxx" and match it up.
If you go to a wine shop they will try and get you into a more expensive bottle then you need.
Get a couple of bottles so you don't run out. The stuff doesn't go bad, and you never know if you get a lady over and she wants a drink you have options. If you want to step it up another level it isn't all that bad to have a decent scotch on hand also.

This man knows what he's talking about.
Like I mentioned earlier, stick with California Zinfandels. A bottle of pinot noir is good too. They all go great with roast pig and ham.

I find this isn't really true. But then again, i'm friendly with my wine shop and i'm a good customer. They hook me up with deals and well priced "value" wines. they never try to mark me up

I don't drink wine. Never have. And I know next to nothing about it. But I'm hosting a Christmas dinner this year and would like to have a few nice bottles for the group. I'll be serving a big roast and ham and all the other stuff you'd expect. What do I get?
Get a nice Cabernet and a Pinot Grigio for the white wine drinkers
When all else fails a Chilean Red wine is always good and reasonably priced. Plus women like a guy who can choose something that doesn't taste like shit at a restaurant. I always use this default.
Any Italian white is good as well.

The replies are awesome. Way more than I expected. With the help from you guys I decided to go to my local Sams Club tomorrow to make the purchase. I know I won't get the "wine shop know how" but I figure I can buy an extra bottle or two with the savings as well. I plan to buy a pinot noir, a red zinfandel, a chardonnay of some sort, and then what ever else catches my eye. I'm gonna search and review your suggestions while I'm shopping.

FYI, it's just Zinfandel. you said Red Zinfandel, which is not right, but good for you to think because you certainly want to avoid White Zinfandel which is a pink shit wine
