Most major chains actually put a ton of stuff on sale on the Wednesday BEFORE Thanksgiving.
The stores start to open on thanksgiving da now day so the workers don't like to come into work on that day even earlier to set up the sale
Tickets and signs.
So they do it on Wednesday night at about 6pm. If you go shopping after work on that day, they'll honor many Black Friday sales!
No crowds!
All the merchandise to yourself!
I've shopped on Wednesday night for many years saved a ton and had the whole store to myself!
I swear, for some women it's a tradition. They LOVE shopping on Black Friday.........not so much about getting deals, it's about being "out there in the crowd"........kind of like opening day of trout season (another day I avoid).

All the good deals are online right now anyways between tonight and tomorrow. Unless you wanna wait for that item they have 20 of for the whole store, stay home, watch football, and look for deals.

When I worked for Target, the ONLY thing (of major interest) that was immediately available was the large flat screen TV. First season or two they were on a pallet, there for the taking...Next time around, they were put into individual carts to keep things moving quicker. Finally, they got smart (and avoided the fights) by going outside like 30mins prior to opening, and handing out tickets to the front of the line. Didn't matter if you had your family holding the first 5 spots, and everyone met up at the same register....first come, first dibs. No more fights, or damages...just hurt feelings.
Everything else, from video games to small appliances, or toys were all brought out to the floor at hourly intervals. Obviously, they came in much larger quantities than the TVs, so even if you strolled in after the people who camped out, you still felt like you got a deal. Besides, most people forget how PHUCKING long the line will be to checkout, so you have plenty of time to let your accomplice walk around and get the deal(s).
I hated to work B.F., only because it meant going in at 2a.m., but aside from that, all the whining and fighting and watching people give up in line.....made it all worth it! Last memory I had was 3 groups of people fighting over a bicycle. Wasn't a steal or anything, just all found it at the same time. The men all duked it out, while the women slapped one-another around. The bike got bent and ruined beyond sale-condition, and the cops were called.
Waiting an hour+ to find parking...
Waiting 30+ minutes at Starbucks...
Finding most "deals" were super-limited quantity...
Finally finding a bike you want...
Getting walked through a CROWDED store, in handcuffs...
