Some coutries tipping is not accustomed or necessary. They do NOT tip in Australia but wait and bar staff down there earn close to $20 an hour, unlike the scabby wages that North American bar staff get shafted on.
Also, in Australia for the most part it is not a true service industry, and in most bars, you will have to go to the bar to order your drink. Unlike most of Canada where the wait staff will come to you and actually wait on you. In Australia you have to walk to the bar and wait to be served.
Why would you want/need to tip someone earning $20 an hour when all they do is take your order and turn around and get the beer out of the fridge for you?

Added to my previous comment. Tipping in a pub is not considered " rude " it is just considered unnecessary by patrons as the service in pubs in Australia is very minimal. The patron does most of the work.

I tended bar for years. Never waited on anybody famous though.
I can tell you this, people from the midwest US are terrible tippers. Example, my buddy is from Iowa. He has a decent job. We'll go out, he'll insist on picking up the tab. He'll leave like 3 bucks on a 75 dollar ticket. (I always compensate for it though).
As far as the British and others that come here to visit and don't tip, well, that's bullshit because they know how it works here. My bartender friends here in Vegas complain about that all the time. I'll have to agree. It's not like they don't know - they do.

It could have something to do with the prices of drinks. I found Vancouver to be an expensive city to drink in, whereas Montreal and Toronto were cheaper.
Aside from the service, my tipping is also affected by the price of the drinks. If I feel that I am being overcharged for drinks, I will be inclined to tip less. I know that this puts the staff in no mans land, but if additional money is being taken out of my pockets then I find it hard to be inclined to tip highly.

I am a Canadian and Canadians are terrible tippers. Used to be a bartender and I travelled to Honolulu, after a few nites hanging out in a club, the staff asked me where I was from. When I told them Vancouver, they said I did'nt act Canadian. I asked why and they said it was because I tipped.

i just served ronald belasario the dodgers relief pitcher.... he has his broad sign his tabs and she tips like shit. I have served tommy davis of the dodgers he tips well... i have served sugar shane mosely and he is cool and tips well. but besides that black women tip like fucken shit and so do foriegners.. people who don't tip can get a shot of my gizz in there drink those assholes.. who goes out expects someone to serve them and not tip.. fucken low lifes

Here's another question. How many people do their job and then assume, expect or demand to be given extra money just for doing their job? 99% of the work force does their job for the pay they agreed to and no more.
Tips are a privilige, or a reward for good service they are not a fucking god given right. So you served a fucking drink. Big deal. Do you tip your doctor if he gives you medicine that cures you of an illness?

That is what a friend of mine said from England. He never tips. Says its not necessary because the people are doing the job they are hired to do. Said the only time he ever tips is if hte person does something above and beyond what is expected.
I usually always tip atleast 20%. I always take care of my bartender and wait staff. I even make sure whenever I go out with friends to stay there until the tip is put on the table because most of the tiem I add more to it cause I dont think its enough.
If you can't afford to eat out and pay for a tip then dont go out. I know of plenty of friends who have waited tables and bar tend and have heard countless stories of people stiffing them on tips for $100 checks or leaving a couple dollars on those types of bills.
One friend even said at their restaurant they had a phrase for anytime a black family or couple would come in because they knew they werent getting a tip. The waitstaff would draw straws to see who got the table.
Big Papi is a great tipper from what I am told.

Not really. Most waitstaff are making at or below minimum wage. If the restaurant or bar paid them what they were worth, you'd be taking the hit on higher menu prices.

Don't get my wrong, I have nothing wrong with tipping and rewarding good service/work, and always do so, but the line is crossed when people not only EXPECT a tip, but are pissed off if they don't get it and have an attitude like that guy. Especially in countries when servers are earning minimum wage. It's even worse when they are earning minimum wage while the management gouge the customer with high prices.
My beef was with the guy calling non-tippers low lifes and assholes. I can imagine him not being able to live off his tips. In most countries where tipping is customary good service is, and will be rewarded but there are many people working a job and they do not get an annual bonus or other reward for doing above average work. If you don't like it, you can always change vocations.

Not really a bartending question but rather a question about proper tipping etiquette;
I call in a to-go order at a restaurant.I arrive to pick up my order and give the hostess/waitress/bartender my credit card.They return with a slip and say, "Just fill out the top part and sign at the bottom."
Well the top part says Amount due - Tip - Total. I always tip well when I dine in but unless I have a special request or ask for something extra I see no reason to tip on a carryout order.What is proper tipping protocol in this case?
How about when you do dine in but it's a place where you place your order and pay at the bar and then a waitress brings your food/drink to your table.What is the proper % to tip?
