Best Card Games All Time

Goose, just thought of this, did you ever play "dice games" on the bar as a kid? I would go with my dad to the VFW and play "Ship/Captain/Crew" or "4's Away" or "Horses" with some of the local veterans with my allowance money - some of my best memories.....


On second thought, may have led to my gambling problem, but anyways.....


BTW - for anyone interested - "Ship/Captain/Crew"


Take 5 dice, and you get three rolls (if you need them). "Ship/Captain/Crew" is a 6,5,4, and then your highest "combo" with the other 2 dice. So, the very best you could roll is a 6,5,4, and two "sixes" on your first roll (and it happens once in a blue moon) - but it's all downhill from there.....


"4's Away" - Once again, 3 rolls. Each roll you take away any '4' and the lowest dice - highest score loses. Obviously the best score would be 5 "4's" on the first roll - totaling zero.....

My degenerate gambling career began at age 9.

My uncle was and still is a huge Dodger fan. He was bragging how Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale were going to destroy the Orioles in the 1966 World Series. I went into my bedroom and retrieved my cigat box full of money that I had earned cutting lawns all summer long I bet him the entire $57 that Baltimore would defeat LA. What he didn't know was that I listened every night to the Orioles on my transistor radio tuned to WBAL. The AM radio faded in and out while I went to sleep. I had every statistic memoriized. The Orioles swept the series in four straight games and my degenerate. Gambling career was launched. I was King of the soda shop for several months treating all my friends to soda and candy

In my college days......(before  hold em!).....we used to play a poker

game called "butterfly".  

The rules would take too long but it's mainly a High/Low game where

you have rounds where you build the best or worst hand.

It was fascintating because in the middle of your hand you could 

switch from trying to go high and then change to trying to get the 

lowest hand.  It's intriguing because you can deduce what your

opponents are trying to do and you could play defense by taking 

a card they might need and discarding it in a later round.

We had many close hands with a lot of interaction. t

To me, it was more fun than hold em ever is !!

My grandmother taught my sisters and me how to play crazy8's and rummy at the age of 6. When we were 10-12 she taught us how to play poker. Many Friday nights playing nickel-dime poker. When I was 12 I taught all the neighborhood kids how to play and it was game on. Still love playing any kind of poker today.

Surprised that my 2 favorites weren't mentioned

Canasta and Rook 

My buddy and I team up against our wives, and spice it up by having the losers do punishments that were pre written and drawn from a hat...makes you really really not want to lose.

My Grandmother taught me to play " Casino" when I was about 9 years old..

Played that game often for many years.

For me it's 7 card stud Hi/Lo and double deck pinochle without the 9's....love to play both of them..
