Portugal legalized all drugs and their crime rate went down of course. The U.S. and other countries thought they were nuts. Now they're doing fine and drug usage has stayed the same. Some say it has even decreased by a small margin.
Prohibition does not give you the control of drugs. It does just the opposite. It's a proven fact that a kid can get his hands on drugs easier than he can on alcohol. A drug dealer won't card him.
Aside from all that it should be our constitutional right to grow marijuana. It doesn't hurt anybody, and the medical uses it has is unknown to many due to none other than ignorance. People just aren't aware of what it can do. The list of illnesses and diseases that it helps with is longer than you'd think and this plant has been used as a medicine by man for thousands of years.
Alcohol consumption alone kills about 100,000 a year. The addiction of it destroys lives every day. Cigarettes kill about 430,000 every year in the U.S. Yet it's "OK" do consume these goods. It is generally accepted by the general public. The beer commercials you see on TV tell you to drink this and drink that. It's the cool trendy thing to do. But it's really not. Roll a joint and smoke it instead. It does far less damage to the body, and you'll wake up feeling fantastic. Not only that, the high you get from it and just better. I'm happy because the public is realizing this more and more. Weed is simply the smarter, better, safer, and healthier choice.
Nobody has ever been able to prove that weed kills brain cells. Nobody has ever been able to link it to lung cancer. Nobody has ever died from weed. There is not one recorded death in the history of man.
I think the hypocracy is downright hilarious and at the same time it pisses me off. That's OK though. I'm gonna keep on smoking and I'll be better off for it.
I've listened to so many arguments for the prohibition of marijuana and the fact is, I haven't heard one good one yet. Yet it remains illegal. People for legalization bring up hard facts to support their argument and people for prohibition spew out rhetoric that is not based on fact or scientifically proven studies. It's actually amazing to me that it's not legal. The level of the stupidity is astonishing.
I challenge anyone to make an argument for prohibition. I'll counter with facts and I'll win the argument. Usually though, they still won't admit defeat. They never do.
I have plenty of facts that support the utter and complete decriminalization of weed. Not so much other drugs possibly cocaine. However I think marijuana specifically needs to be decriminalized NOT legalized.
Rehab centers and drug treatment institutions were first subsidized under the Nixon administration back in the early 1970s while he was president. In fact aside from the Watergate scandal he was the last great republican president.
Nixon and plenty of other criminologists understood that it was fiscally responsible and better for society to have more drug treatment centers than placing people in prison. It was simply more cost effective to do so and the nixon and lyndon johnson administration realized this.
To put a person in prison for smoking crack or weed, nixon realized would do them no good. They would be surrounded by other violent and non-violent criminals who would reinforce their bad habits. Because drugs are so rampant in prison due to corrupt guards, conniving visitors sending people to prison for mandatory sentences would ultimately be detrimental to these individuals recovery.
So as far as decriminalization goes, its really a no brain er but complete legalization is not the answer. I've smoked weed before just like a high majority of people on this forum most likely but legalizing these drugs is not something that is good for a society let a lone a community. For medical purposes sure, growing manufacturing with licenses sure.
Legalizing it would only further the laziness in this country and could possibly promote further black market selling depending on the prices.
