I always tip...but it varies big time. I won't give nothing...but if it's THAT bad...I'll give virtually nothing.

Yes and I’m sure you’re a waiter because you are doing so well financially.

Thought I would chime in on this conversation.  Have to agree with StraightShooter and others.  I tip accordingly.  Usually 20% if it's ok to good service.  If it's outstanding service, I've probably given anywhere from 25-50%.  If it's bad service, it will be somewhere below 20% depending on how bad the service is, including no tip at all.  So I guess you can call me a cheapskate, but I know I'm no cheapskate.  I've been with friends who give me shit b/c they felt I've tipped too much.

What pisses me off is the brainwashing that has gone on in this country, to where all these servers are going to starve if they don't get big tips.  I used to feel bad for not tipping someone that was a horrible server.  I remember an incident in college where a waitress was extremely rude to my friends and I, yet I felt bad and left her like a 10% tip anyways.  I thought I got her real good.  Well, now I feel like a fucking box, and probably shouldn't have even paid the tab.  I have since changed and am trying to stick to my guns.  If you do a good job, I'll give a good tip.  If you do shit, I'll give you shit.

What changed for me?  Well, someone mentioned in this thread about other countries not tipping.  I've been to several places around the world and have noticed this as well.  One place of significance is Japan.  They do not accept tips there.  If you give them a tip, they'll hand it back to you b/c they don't really know what to do with it.  On top of that, they wait on you hand and foot.  I have never had better customer service than I did in Japan, and yet, no one there expects tips.  They make American waitstaffs look like lazy pieces of shit.  Now, I'm sure they do get paid a little bit higher wage, but no way it equates to what Americans get after factoring in their tips.  Since that trip, I've been to several other international destinations and have seen a trend.  So now, I try to stick to my guns and only tip according to level of service.  Don't be a lazy fuck and I will tip you well.

And it has happened to me too, where we've gotten shit service yet had to do the mandatory 18% b/c we had a larger party.  That really pissed me off.  If it happens again, I'll be sure to complain to the manager, or go higher if it is a chain.

And it has happened to me too, where we've gotten shit service yet had to do the mandatory 18% b/c we had a larger party.  That really pissed me off.  If it happens again, I'll be sure to complain to the manager, or go higher if it is a chain.

Yes, the sense of entitlement from American waiters and waitress like osirus13 is amazing. They think they can do a shit job and still be entitled to a good tip and if you don’t compensate them the same as you would someone who actually did a good job then you are a cheapskate.

They don’t realize that a good tip is supposed to be a reward for service that is, at the very least, decent. It’s not something that’s automatic no matter how shitty of a job they do.

It's hilarious that restaurant servers EXPECT to make anywhere from $150-$200 dollars a day cash for walking food to your table. Some hookers don't make that much and they're dodging cumshots.

Why would you give 15% for bad service? That encourages them to keep giving shitty service. That perpetuates the cycle. Our country has got to the point where people expect to be given something for nothing. Its just stupid.

Osirus13 is obviously a shitty waiter that usually gets shitty tips and for some reason or another he thinks he should be compensated the same as the waiters and waitress that actually do a decent job.  And he thinks if you don’t give him a good tip after bad service then you are a cheapskate.

obviously if its absolutley horrendous service thats one thing....

but i guess i just give the servers the benefit of the doubt that they might just be having an off day.........

For people that work on salary?

Do you bring your "A" game every time you step foot in to work ?  Are you at your very best every single minutes of every single hour you are working?

If your answer is "no" ??  Do you get money deducted from your paycheck ??

If your answer is "yes" ??  Good for you- that's pretty fucking impressive.............

I’m not quite sure how asking them to simply do a decent job if they want a decent tip equates to someone being at their “very best every single minutes of every single hour” they are working.

    well luke duke---

if you go back and read your posts, you clearly state you tip based on performance,,,,,a great performance gets a "big tip"

and a poor performance gets "no tip".....

and remembering again,,,,,a server makes like 3.10 an hour (or something like that)

I don’t know about you, but for most people to put forth a decent effort they don’t have to be at their “very best every single minutes of every single hour” they are working.

Of course, most people have IQ’s over 75. It might be a different case for you.

In order to be disappointed in someone you would have to first expect something more from them than the behavior they constantly display. Needless to say, pretty much everyone that has encountered you is use to your moronic and childish behavior so no one expects anything more from you.

And Rizz has little to do with whether or not you end of up in the box…yet again. That is determined by your own behavior. So I’m sure you’ll be back there in no time.

Something no one has mentioned (that I noticed) - you should consider what the person is probably making.  There have been doormen in Vegas who made hundreds of thousands per year.  I speak in the past tense because I read an article about them a long time ago.  They are probably still there and still raking it in, but I don't know for sure.

If you watch a casino cocktail waitress, some of them could well be clearing $100/hour (which equates to $200,000/year).  Meanwhile, some of them in dumpy casinos might struggle to make $20/hour.

I delivered pizzas and found it was tough to ever average more than about $10/hour in tips.

So, I look at it more like who is really going to appreciate it?  A pizza delivery guy (or gal) is truly going to appreciate a $5 tip, and he risked his life on the road for you, and may have just spent 10 or 15 minutes driving.  Meanwhile, someone like a doorman might just spend a few seconds serving you, and he won't even give a shit about your $5 tip because he's used to fat cats slipping him twenties and hundreds.

I'm not interested in tipping people who devote a few seconds of their time to me (this includes bartenders).  I will not give those people more than $1.  People who really put in some time for me - they are going to be tipped nicely.

I don't really believe in unskilled laborers clearing far more than I can earn teaching with my Master's degree.  So, I don't mindlessly throw tips out left and right.

I have no doubt you will continue being a confused simpleton whose immature behavior keeps landing him in the penalty box.

Although I must admit seeing you continually embarrass yourself is kind of entertaining.

Wow, the simpleton finally learned that the first thing to do when you have dug yourself into a hole is to stop digging.

There may be hope for you yet. Sure, you’ll always be a simpleton that is confused by most of the world around him, but maybe, just maybe, you can learn social skills that will allow you to be a functioning member of society.

    Godspeed, simpleton. Godspeed.
