ok, im sure there are gonna be a lot of wise ass remarks on this forum, but i would really like to start a serious thread. has anyone hear ever gone to a gamblers anonymous meeting. how was it? what was it like? do you feel that you benefited? was it worth it?
personally, i used to be a very big gambler and it caused a lot of problems in my life. since then i've calmed downed drastically, but recently have begun to fall into a lot of my old traps and have thought about going to some meetings. i am a very strong person who normally doesnt talk about things and tend to get through problems by myself.
i would like to hear some thought from you guys.
and remember lets try to limit the wise ass-ness please

gambling is addicting as anything else, and the repercussions just as bad as any drug. it's fucking great when you're winning, but an endless hole when you're losing. i say fuck it, find a meeting, and go,what's the worst thing that happens, you don't go back??? or maybe you meet some cool fuckers that have been right where you are.
Good luck bro
keep a good head.

no not at all. just to give you an idea of where my head is. i stopped gambling for a couple years. then this year i started again and lost 7k from the start of college football till week 5 of nfl. then i hit for 8k and felt great. lost 500 the next week, then 5k last week. i know i'll just lose it all again. in my heart im pretty much done, just wanna see where everyone else has been.
i dont really bet on everything, just what i like.an average week will consist of 10-15 bets

paying juice on 15 games is flushing your money down the shitter (and I hope you're not parlaying)...
For the NFL, pick ONE GAME in the afternoon slate and ONE GAME for the late afternoon...put a couple hundred on it to keep you interested throughout the day AND DO NOT TRY TO RECOUP your losses with the 8:30 or MNF game...
I would stay away from CFB....there are 50+ games you could bet on virtually every hour of the day...VERY ADDICTIVE...
You're betting way above your head...calm down
I'm not sure such meetings would help you but really you have nothing to lose...So just find one and walk in the door.

i dunno, maybe i just had a bad night and am over reacting. its just my losses have been heart breaking. i'll give you an idea of what i've been dealing with. i had the under in that tex/nyy game when 6 runs were scored in the 9th. i kept chasing the phils in the nlcs. had boise first half tonight (lost by 1 point). had the heat tonight, vikings on sunday night, i could go on and on.
scal, i dont parlay. also where in nj do you live. i see you go on your racism rants and just curious if its where you live that affects it

I've been to many, many meetings. The problem w/ GA vs AA is that there are not a lot of meetings available to go to. Also if you are like me then you probably enjoy Sports Betting and maybe some casino action. That said 95% of the people I met at GA meetings were Lottery addicts which I had a very hard time relating too.
Guys talking about choosing a scratch ticket over gas for their car and abandoning the car. Or choosing a scratch ticket over food for their children. The stories I've heard are insane wife's blowing their husbands entire life savings behind their back on fucking scratch tickets. Many people lost 1k and were lifers wish I did that I'd be a multi millionaire,
The last meeting I was at I mentioned that I had a hard time relating to scratch tickets as I was more of Sports bettor and some nut read me the riot act. Told me oh you're a Big Shot have you ever bet a million on a game? Have you ever been in a poker pot for a million? Of course I said no. His response every time I scratch a ticket I have a chance to win a million. This guy had been found by neighbors attempting to hang himself.
GA believes that any time you place money in anything without knowing the outcome you are gambling or basically do anything w. out knowing the outcome. So they told me to quit my job as a stock trader and they were serious. They told me not to be involved in charity raffles at my Exchange club cause I was gambling.
So even though they were over the top and I couldn't relate to the insanity of most I went every night, did what the said other than quitting my job and you know what happened? I didn't gamble. This went on for a period of a year I saved money and didn't waste time watching a ticker versus being w. my family. Every holiday I wasn't watching a game and having it's outcome control my mood. This gave me more time to work and I earned more money. Then I stopped going and now back on this site betting and losing money. I stopped going Oct 2008 and have easily lost 60k since so if you're losing big and can't afford it then go. If you're real serious get a sponsor do the 12 steps and get out of this never ending hell we call gambling I wish I could but I just can't.

Its been so bad for me at times now anytime when I hear the sportscenter song start up it brings me back to the times that I had screwed up bigtime. Like deja vu
You know the second the game goes off the intro starts......dun dan dun......dun dan dunnn.
Reminds me of the shock that the ride is over and now Im fucked that I had everything on the line on the Monday nite game and my fantasy land is now a grimm reality......Time to pay the fiddler
But dont beat yourself up man it all works itself out.....Every true gambler has horror stories but the key is to learn from our own dumb mistakes.......Im 31 and I am a better bettor all round based on dumb shit ive done in the past......
Key is patience, control, and MONEY MANAGEMENT. Dont just bet because there is a TV game on. Its tough I know from experience
At one point or another Ive broken every gambling rule in the book...dont let it get u down.

I have been to one meeting and it creeped me out for the most part. First off I wore a hat of my favorite college team and was told I needed to get it out of there since it may have been the team that cost someone their last big bet. People told stories of stealing, robbing, performing sex acts for money to gamble with etc. They talked of cheating family, like getting a family members ssn to open a credit card to bet with. To be honest the only person I have hurt in gambling is myself. I couldn't identify with people who had committed crimes to gamble. Sure there have been times where I had to eat bologna sandwiches for nearly two weeks because I fucked away my check, but I never stole from anyone. They took me in another room after hearing the stories and asked if I was in trouble or had people after me. I was like no, I said I had won a lo and fucked it away and I just want to try and stop gambling. They acted like they didn't trust me and shit. I guess most people come in there with broken limbs or paranoid because Paulie is after them. That's my experience, but every meeting is different. Give it a try, maybe it will help you or there will be people you identify with at your meeting. Good luck.

Hell I myself am battling a scratch ticket addiction...... It is a batlle not to buy them when they are everywhere. Ive hit a few decent ones but its never enough.
I wont ever go to any meetings though because I believe the problem is mine and I am the only one who can control my impulsive tendencies. Being honest with yourself about the reality of what your doing is the only way you can curb destuctive behavior. I dont need to go to a crowded room where people exchange 1-up gambling horror stories.
But I think for some GA is effective because they get to vocalize how big of a jackass they have been. They say that for those people getting it off their chests is the best medicine. But I dont need a group for me to realize how big of a jack ass ive been at times......Admit to yourself and learn from your mistakes.
I have kicked the idea of going to a sex addicts anonymous meeting to find a chic though

One who gambles, lives life in shambles. You have a decision here. You can continue a horrid life, filled with regret, anger, stress. Or you can pursue other means that may lead to a better life. The choice belongs to you.

Seriously, if you think you've got a problem, then go to a meeting.
That being said, from how you describe yourself, you sound like somebody who just bets over your head.
The only way you can win or lose that much $$$ on so few bets is if you're betting your house with every bet. OR else you are chasing your losses big-time. Neither is a good strategy. And since it seems like it's the money-lost that concerns you, then you obviously can't afford to bet that much.
Did you ever think of just betting $200 on a game and leaving it at that?
NOTE: If the idea of only betting $200 per game doesn't appeal to you because you "need" big-money on a bet then - yeah - go to a meeting.
