This is a where you read from a manual and go around and do sharing... you are welcome to pass and just listen if you want till you are more comfortable... Meetings area good routine to keep things fresh in your mind...
2. Sponsor
GA came out of the AA big book tradition and having a sponsor who has gone through recovery themselves is helpful to get support from someone that has been there and done that
3. Step work
GA is a 12 step model, but you do not do step work in the meetings... often times there will be a workbook and discussion class offered at a different time and day... This is the where the real work happens and the real introspection and actual progress happens...
4. Socialization
There are often BBQs. golf, fishing, camping, retreats, conferences... "Birthdays" are celebrated for abstinence with a cake... I worked with one group that went out to dinner with each other once a month to a place with out gambling...
GA works for some but not for all... I would say to just try going to a few (like 5, not one) meetings and make up your mind for yourself...

beyond being a member, three is something about charitable and selfless giving of your time that can be a healing process... this could be being involved with making coffee to actually facilitating the meeting...
