I jsut sent this to someone w/r/t my trip to Nola next weekend:
There are a million totally wonderful things to do in Nola, but time is not exactly our friend. Port of Call is basically Tesarro’s [a Pittsbrugh burger joint] , though generally a little better. We could also go to the Parkway Bakery for a couple of po-boys. That’s in the same general direction, though not walkable to the Quarter (at least not if you plan on making it all the way to the Quarter, well, alive). Going to PoC or Parkway is generally the only thing my wife insists on doing while we’re there – often the first thing we do period. Another option, also in the same general direction, is Liuzza’s by the Track, a hole-in-the-wall practically on the backstretch of the Fairgrounds Racetrack. It has odd hours,, but their BBQ-ed shrimp po-boy is one of the ten best things I’ve ever eaten anywhere. Going to Parkway or Liuzza’s would only mean a couple of minutes more in the car once we were done eating. I’m sort of leaning Liuzza’s, as I see they are open until 7:00 now. I would just have to find it.

We could probably do the PoC on Sunday, when simpler, burger-based fare may seem more appealing than paper-thin, fried catfish. If, however, paper-thin fried catfish sounds like a good idea, we can hit Middendorf’s on the way home. Middendorf’s is in Manchac, which is essentially in the middle of a bayou. It will also be crawling with Bama fans, who know the spots to hit when travelling between Baton Rouge and their respective trailer parks. The first time I went, it was with some folks I didn’t know that well after a Bama drubbing. Once we turned off the highway, it was literally too dark to see your hand in front of your face. I thought they might have been taking out the collective Tiger frustrations on my sorry ass, but it turned out to be just (a wonderful) dinner (except for the Bama fans).

I did't mention it in the email because there's no way I can get there next weekend, but Jaques Imo is my favorite real restaurant in New Orleans. I also like Little Dizzy's for breakfast.
Have fun.

I believe every place I mentioned, with the possible exception of Jaques Imo's, looks like hell.
