There are numerous laws on the books which are outdated and not enforced for the benefit of society. Ever J-walk? Go a few miles over the speed limit? Smoke weed? Strictly enforcing rules like those would be detrimental to society and would benefit no one. Not every law is necessarily a good idea for society.
If prostitution were legalized, regulated and taxed it would be pushed out of neighborhoods and into more suitable areas of towns. Society would see a benefit as well in terms of tax dollars and police would be free to pursue other crimes, such as violent crimes, that actually do harm the community.
