BTW - it doesn't matter how new or old your computer is.
Some viruses test IP addresses all the time. So if you don't have a proper firewall or AV software set up, you can get a virus just by connecting to the internet.
I will get you a list of what the hits were . I run Nortons and Avg which I keep updated every day . Its just some pages that you go into that you get a hit . It could be from one of the ads thats on that page at the time . I went back in to post that I got a hit from and then nothing . But thanks Lou I don't mean to be a pain but over $500 a pop for a new comp that hurts the pocket alittle

Lou, I do not think personally covers is attacking my CPU.
But as an avid user, my cpu has slows down as the banner as loads up to the right top corner and sometimes when it loads, it blocks out the actual covers page and I have to back out and reload it. I do not click banners or advertisements anywhere!
But when the banner loads is when I get my message saying that my software is blocking this site from cross-scripting over pages?

Believe me, we want to figure this out more than anybody.
Unfortunately, we can't replicate this ourselves.
I love it that people think we're not taking it seriously. Shit, if we actually WERE giving people viruses, we'd be giving two million people a virus each month. In short, we'd be out of business.
There is a chance - a small chance - that this is coming from an ad from one of our ad networks. I doubt it, because we only deal with pretty high-end networks, and if this was happening as long as people say it has been, then the ad network would have heard about it by now.
But it is possible.
Either way,we've contacted them all about th complaints, and they assure us its not them. Of course they would, but they wold also fix it.
The only way we can know for sure is for somebody to tel us exactly what virus is giving the alert and what exact page they were on and what ads were showing.
Then we could isolate which network/ad might be causing the problem and ask them to deal with it.

No problem Jersey.

Lou, just for example as I open up many pages here. I do not get the warning for the site cross scripting every time but I would say about 5 out of 10 times I open up any page for a thread in the forums i get that message.
Its been a while since i have had those 2 or three different ones that used to cover the page and tell me I won for being the 100,000th user. Which was the worst cause it would scream out of the speakers in the quiet.....You've won!
I really do not have any experience in technical stuff I am going more on a hunch that it seems like when CPU's are crashing, it sure is ironic how there are programs poping up all over the place one way or another advertising they can clean up the problem you now have. It is not as direct as some I have seen where it totally shuts your computer down. But it is funny I think that this has been a hot topic lately and this is the first time EVER at covers that I have known that covers is allowing advertisers to sell their security products.
I really don't know but it is just a thought
I right clicked the banner that came up when I read this page.
it is one of the 10 or so different Norton ads that are filling in that space.

This is a great example of what I'm talking about.
We don't serve that ad. Never have. It's not on any of our networks either.
The only network ads we have are banner ads... nothing that could possibly take up a whole page.
If you (or anybody else) have been receiving that ad, then you have a virus or spyware or malware - and that's what was serving those ads... not Covers.
Note that a lot of "spyware killer" programs are in fact spyware themselves. What they do is trick you into thinking that are finding and killing spyware, when they actually are doing nothing but serving up ads themselves.
Now, I'm not sure if this is the same problem as the virus reports - your AV software may have found it, since you are not getting the ad anymore - but I'm willing to bet they are related.

I will but I have not had any real issues myself other than a few slow downs when ads are loading up along with the page has been modified to prevent cross site scripting warning

Just FYI, my work filtering software only blocks some of the ads that covers is showing... my guess is that one of your advertisers (intentionally or unintentionally, who knows) has some malicious code built into their ad that runs whenever it loads here on Covers. I know that, like others, I got infected with a fake Security Center/antivirus type program right after loading Covers website a month or so ago.

The tech guys haev been super frustrated reading about this and unable to replicate it on this side - and nobody wants to tell us exactly what's happening - only that they have a virus and it must be from us.
Now that we have some specific info, they can start eliminating possibilities.

Thanks guys great info.

We are zeroing on this as a possibility... or one of many possibilities... blinx.com virus.
Blinx.com is a site that hijacks your search settings. Read the links below to see that it does seem to fit the profile of a lot of the complaints here.
All it would have taken is on person to post one bad link in this forum and if you ended up on blinx.com, you are fucked.
Blinx is a virus which appears to be transmitted by the

The ad that has the bright and yellow banner that screams congratulations you are the 1,000th winner is straight malware......I know because i push offers like this and posted a thread about this maybe 6 months ago.
You can go back and look i told you it was going to mess up the user experience of your site. Anymore info i would ask lippsman to see what ads are running ad and spyware......cause it is more than one.
Probably the offers that make you the most money too.

Is there any actual reason at all that you guys aren't seriously questioning your ad partners? Not just inquiring, but getting in their face and taking it up the chain if you have to.
As dopalicous said above and I said in a different thread, if you have one of those congrats you're the 10000 visitor ads at all running on your site, it's most likely bad news and you should be grilling your shitty ad network because they either don't give a fuck or don't do a good job screening the ads they receive.
