It is literally almost every game they mess up timeouts.
yesterday, i saw what i think is the worst example of wasting a timeout before a punt that i can remember seeing. i'm sure a lot of people saw it.
it was the NYG/Dallas game. giants up 1. about 1:15 left. NYG have the ball on the dallas 38. that much i remember because it's what makes this so incredibly stupid. 4th down, NYG are going to punt. NYG are waiting for the play clock to run out and i just can just feel this moron mcadoo is going to call a timeout. and with a second left, he wastes a timeout.
what makes this one especially dumb is the friggin giants are on the dallas 38 and mcadoo can't figure out that a timeout in a 1 point game is 100 times more valuable than the 5 yards you'd lose on a delay of game penalty when you are on the other team's 38. with more than a minute left, dallas could easily get a field goal and then you might have 30 seconds or so to get the lead back and you'd desperately need that timeout.
so, instead of losing the 5 yards on a delay of game penalty and kicking from the dallas 43 rather than the 38, mcadoo wastes the timeout. not that it matters, but of course the NYG punter punts it about 5 yards into the end zone for a touchback.
this is indefensible.
anyway, the NYG beat a depleted cowboys team and i heard mcadoo got the game ball when he should probably be demoted to assistant.
as ignorant as some of these coaches are about timeouts and clock management, we'll probably see a dumber example at some point, but for an nfl coach who gets paid a lot of money to make these decisions, this one was amazing.
