At least 30 million. I'm worth 8 figures and still haven't technically quit my job though I rarely actually work. And I work and live in two different states so i'm borderline retired now. Not technically though. I still work some here and there. Just enough to hang with the fellas and keep my benefits going.
30 mil seems high but it all depends on your lifestyle and where you plan to live. Do you have dependents?
Let’s say you spend 150k a year on food, housing, travel, and entertainment. Even if you think you’ll live to 90 that’s 7.5 mil not factoring in any investments but it also doesn’t factor in inflation either.
Real estate with the intention on making them rental properties is never a bad way to go if you buy in the right area. If you don’t want to deal with the headaches pay a good management company 6%
$30m??? Are you nuts??? I haven't worked in 10 years and stopped with $900K. Any idiot can turn 10% a year on their cash. You can't live on $100K a year in retirement? Where and what mansion are you retiring? LOL.
You guys be very careful with that work s#it. Trust me work is very highly overrated. It's corny but true... If you've got your health then that's what's important. Can name at least a dozen guys I knew who wouldn't retire and ended up having strokes and dying or are sitting in wheel chairs.
Spend your money because in the end your kids/bratty grandchildren/State/Feds/retirement home are going to rob you blind anyway!!!
Haven't had a paycheck in 20years+ and very safe to say I sleep very well. When our bankroll gets to a certain size,the money does the work and its not even handicapping any more,the money makes the money in the DARK. By in the dark,I haven't had an Income in 20+ years and sports/horses are 1 of the only entrprises that allowws the exchange of 1000s of $ without an SEC,IRS,or LGBTQ etc. to tag you. I've got a landline and I never say anything I won't say to the DA. My biggest pain is that I have to wait until the Casinos/racetracks stop checking ID at the door via Red Death cause I'm barred at most of them.
My biggest problem is finding Outs and my girlfriend is going to learn how to be a Beard.

Maybe I misunderstood the question. I didn't take it as "How much would it take for one to retire?" I took it more of a "How much is enough for you, personally, at the age of 40 to decide to stop working." I'm a couple years from 40 and pretty well off but I like going to work. I don't work much. Like I said, my job is in another state but I pick up a project here and there. Few days here, couple weeks there. I would have to be looking at 25-30 to just completely stop working at 40. Work is so much fun when you don't need the money. When you know you can just walk if it comes to it.
It's not about how much it would take to live. I could probably live happily on next to nothing. For me it's how much to walk away from 20 years of earning potential, and in turn, the earning potential of that income.
I know a lot of people would like to get the capital to start their business so depending on how much you wanted to work, you could call it retirement/semi retirement
I for one would like 100k for sports investments and possibly 300/400K for business
house/apartment bought and paid off , owning additional property a bonus, but rental income can be hit or miss depending on the city and economic circumstances and of course covid

"Casinos/racetracks stop checking ID"... Got the same problem here with Mohegan Sun Casino. They booted me 20 years ago. But I still like to sneak in there sometimes for a steak, concert, or just to play baccarat for a quick "hit-em-and-run". Couple weeks ago bought in at a $100 table with only $500. Of course when they ask me for a players card I decline. 20 minutes later I'm up $450 and out the door I went. What's wrong with a quick $450? I fly under the radar. No different than any other gambling. Keep it small and don't get greedy. It's actually easier with the covid because I wear a full bandana mask. The only time they want me to lower the mask is at the cage. That's when a beard companion comes into play.

Real estate/Rental property is such a serious pain in the azz. Even with a good management company you've still got their fee, taxes, getting and keeping good tenants and a host of other headaches. At age 40 I could handle it but over age 60 now I want a much easier lifestyle.

My mother-in-law, God Bless her Old Soul, used to scare the living s#it out of me with that stuff. She did psychic readings, had all kinds of witchcraft paraphernalia, it was freaky. Of course not saying Stu does these things but many psychics claim to be "Old Souls" and your remark reminded me of those experiences with her.

Hey, i'm a Californian. A state built on a gold rush. More than that, i'm a student of history and a gambler. I recognized a modern day gold rush when I saw it unfolding. I took a gamble and won. Truth be told, most in the gold rush ended up penniless and the real winners, as far as transcendent wealth, were the merchants but hey, that's where the gambler comes in. I was early on the crypto train and it paid off. I also got in on Tesla early on. A local Toyota factory closed that employed a bunch people I know and Tesla moved in and put those people back to work. It's the only reason it was on my radar.
I got in on Amazon somewhat early but not nearly as early as I should've. My wife, then girlfriend, introduced me to Amazon when they were still mostly just a used book seller. We buy a lot of books. Then all of a sudden they were selling other products, but more as a 3rd party platform like Ebay. Individuals selling to other individuals. Then one day this skin stuff she used to buy through Amazon from a 3rd party instead comes from an Amazon fulfillment center. I should've pulled the trigger in that very moment but I lagged. Little did I know but Lex Luthor Bezos was already on his march towards world domination way back then. He was an early adapter of data mining, cloud computing, ect. way back then and I believe already had his first government contracts.

Besides the money lost, how much time have you lost? (Leaning against the table, with the last $80 bucks, betting the table MINIMUM saying "You need this number bad" only to 7 out. You would have made MORE money had you traded those hours at a MINIMUM WAGE JOB)

Just be thankful that we all live in developed counties (I assume that most of us are) and that we have the bare minimum. A job, roof, access to health care, war free living conditions, a car, etc.....
Even with the bare minimum stated above, we're still better off than 2/3rds of the world's population... Heck, even the homeless in developed countries are in better off conditions than in some 3rd world countries..
To answer the original question, I myself, would probably need around $750,000 USD or a mill. The majority of it would go into dividend stocks and I would live frugally and off the land (most likely in a trailer). A property some what close to the ocean/large body of water so I can farm and fish. As long as I had access to civilization, internet, electricity and water, I'd would be content..
StumpTownStu is truly one of the few individuals that have made it. It could be due to his work ethic, environment, personal attitude, family connections, overall luck in life, etc
BUT
the majority of us will have to work until the age of 60+ to retire. Hey, just be thankful that we can actually retire. There are people out there who will have to work until they die. I would know cuz I've met them and have worked along side them.
As for being a little harsh on zebra, my story about that is that I used to play craps but I don't play no more. I had my awesome run (roughly 6 months) where I just couldn't lose and thought I was invincible but the statistics caught up and my results regressed back to the mean. I'm just glad that I stopped playing and realized that it's a waste of time trying to achieve the "wet dream" of only winning a set amount then repeating it day in an day out. Trust me, somewhere in the many casino trips, you'll lose discipline, bet larger, lose, then chase and most likely will be drunk when playing. I pissed back ALL of my winnings and of course, A LOT of my own hard earned cash that I had saved up over the years. 
As with anything in life, ANYTHING in excess gets boring after a while. A little bit of this and a little bit of that. Not too much in excess..
I haven't been to ANY physical casino in 4+ years but I still bet sports on their apps.. 
Also, I went through that "poker phase" in my life. The "all I have to do is just win $200-400 a day by playing at the 1/2 no limit tables and just wait for premium hands" wet dream. Folks, it's A LOT harder than it is and if you think you can do it, by all means, go ahead and try. 
The casino is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week..
