They are both equally as disgusting. But the riots in Kentucky were due to a basketball team winning a championship. Not exactly a hot bed issue capable of being debated. It's boring. It's not controversial. Everyone knows EXACTLY what happened. They won a basketball game. 
Is it right? Of course not.
In the Trayvon case, people have taken sides and that of course is going to have an affect on how they view the riots.
Is it right? Of course not.

As for scal..a few things:
1. I understand your OP but we all know media coverage is ratings driven.
2. While I think you're a bit extreme at times - it's interesting the level of interst your threads get by people who seemingly hate you. Similar to Skip Bayless or Bill O'Reilly. I can't stand skip but think O'reilly is more balanced than most.
3. You do much more for covers than that chick sarahJ that covers hired and is no longer around.

Its because basketball is way more important than Trayvons life to everyone except those close to him. Nobody else really gives a shit. How many people are killed by drunk drivers every day? Gang violence? War? Cancer? It doesnt matter til its under your roof.

So now the Rodney King riots were premeditated but the Kentucky riot was not?
How convenient! So you will sit here and deny those fans didn't have plans to wreak havoc on the city afterwards if a victory for the Wildcats was achieved? Of course, when they are white fans, it is all on the spur of the moment and 'good fun' that just happened to result in cars being flipped over, gunshots flying, 39+ fires being set, mass injuries etc. etc. etc.
In addition, at a minimum, the major riots of the 90's (which you hurriedly googled to get stats on) had a socially rousing impetus, that is, white cops beating the shit out of an unarmed black man on tape. Of course the cops will come up with any story necessary to justify their actions (King was 'high' and resisting), therefore it took several cops to pull out their billy clubs and brutalize him to make him stay on the ground. This will always be the case for police forces and their terrorism on communities, particularly black ones.
Mind you, the riots didn't occur after the tape was released. It occurred after the police walked (sound familiar?).
More convenient argumentation comes when you measure the damages of a major riot in the aggregate. You quote 'One billion dollars' like you have your pinky to the corner of your mouth.
This discounts the fact that whites riot after nearly every major sports championship. It discounts and ignores the injuries and deaths and property damage. Whites, in the aggregate, not only riot more frequently and for frivolous purposes, but most certainly have an 'accrued riot cost' that is quite significant after all these sporting events (although I am not going to go back and quantify it, you can see the point).
So while blacks rioted in the face of a police force that was on tape terrorizing a black citizen, which threatened societal norms and structure, whites riot for................sports. A sociologist would have a field day with that one.
You're problem is, once again, you see blacks as out of control, uncivilized barbarians (another Neo-Nazi stance) as you elucidated in your last paragraph, but when whites act in a similar manner more frequently (including setting fires, fires of which you tried to relegate to just a car trying to ignore the other 39+ fires, which was the POINT of the counter-argument in the last post) over sporting events, it is a celebration that just got out of hand.
Then you have whites rioting over other things that are sports related but are much more sordid...like riots in support for Joe Paterno after he admitted he failed to contact the police for the Sandusky sexual assaults on children as young as 10 years old. Yes, whites rioted IN SUPPORT of Joe Paterno for this. Curious isn't it?
So while you will sit here and paint blacks as waiting in the shadows to KILL AND LOOT, rioting is not exclusive to the black race, whites engage in it MORE often in the past few decades over meaningless (and sometimes in support of unbelievably immoral actions), making blacks and whites have much more in common than many think in this area.
Have your mom finish crocheting that swastika in that afghan you wrap yourself in while you type up these posts.

1. All media is ratings driven by default just as virtually all jobs are profit-driven. Hospitals try to make a profit. They also save lives and pay physicians very handsomely. This doesn't discount life-saving work. Nor should we discount the job of the man who serves food in a restaurant and takes pride in it so a couple can have a nice night out in the process, even though every meal served is for a profit.
In the same vein, a story from the media can be consumed by the general public and still serve a very important social function and provide a nation-wide realization about prejudice and police bias as this story has.
We need not demonize ALL media and ALL news reports, despite its need for ratings which ensures its survival.
The report on 'pink slime' is VERY important and is a big ratings grabber. That doesn't diminish its importance. Neither does it diminish the importance of the Trayvon Martin story, a story that wouldn't be a speck on national news scene had this man simply been arrested.
2. Bill O'Reilly is not balanced imo, not even close and Fox News is drifting from being anything close to a station that broadcasts news for news' sake.

You RUN to the internet to look up one of the most significant riots in US history, one that occurred only AFTER white policemen walked away from a courtroom, free to continue in their profession, after being caught on tape beating an inebriated black man, to terrorize the black community as they have done during the drug war since its inception, continually disregarding the black life as it lies at their feet, just like Trayvon Martin.
I've used the same resource to show the disparity in arrest, stop and frisk and incarceration rates in the minority community. See the difference?
