6' 9" 170 Pound fighter dies of brain hemorrhage after being ground and pounded out.

This is why I dont respect MMA as a true sport.

It a savage, violent street fight with no real strategy or skill.

Far more athletes have died in the boxing ring than in the MMA cage.  Get your facts right buddy.

Not going to even get into this because you are talking about Boxing which has hundreds, maybe even thousands, of fights weekly around the world that are sanctioned events. During these fights you are only allowed to punch the body or the head and the deaths arise from brain/head trauma....

So obviously there are going to be far more deaths......

What about the MMA fighters who are trying to make a name for themselves and fight in unsanctioned fights... You do know those fights are not considered part of MMA and there have been deaths in those fights.

Boxers take more blows to the head over 12 rounds. Its accumulation of punishment people. The brain bounces around which causes inflammation and swelling. Once that starts blows that would not normally cause much damage do. Any jaring of the head rattles the brain at that point.

MMA fights are shorter and stopped much faster "in most cases". The brain has less time to swell and is knocked around inside the skull alot less.

I am not sure about those statistics. Last I checked there were only 2 deaths from regulated MMA fights and I am sure there are well over a 100,000 participants.

I can tell you don't watch MMA. There is plenty of strategy and skill involved in this sport. If you knew the disciplines you would realize how much strategy and planning goes into the fights.

(This pertains to the fights in UFC and Strikeforce promotions etc, where the fighters know about one another.)

And as far as boxing goes, yeah there may not be more Deaths per 100,000  events that take place, but the end results after multiple individual fights are much much worse.

No skill in mma?  Boxers fight for 6 rounds and then lean on each other while throwing one punch every minute.  It is a joke, put any boxer in the octagon and he will be destroyed...

Boxing is a lot more tactical, strategic and more often than not a fighter with better form will always come out on top.

MMA, all it takes is one punch and your opponent coudl drop like a bag of bricks and you get on top an have the upper hand. When time is spent on the ground, more time is wasted than in boxing when the guys are getting inside and trying to throw body shots but instead holding starts to occur.  Its is extremely rare for one punch in boxing to end a match, unless it happens later in the fight after you are physically exhausted and drained.

A boxer gets by with throwing combos, working the body and outlasting his opponent. He must also have a great defense and move well. Boxers have a limited area (waist up) to legally hit an opponent, and in this area you have your gloves and arms to defend so you must be a lot more accurate and precise with your attack.

In MMA you have from feet to head to attack. It is in no way more strategic or tactical as you have a larger area that you can legal hit an opponent. I know there are different styles of fighting where some are brawlers and others use more holds and such to obtain an submission. However when someone ends up on the mat and another opponent is on top that is about as defenseless as a person can be.

 IN MMA its all about who lands the first crucial blow.

In Boxing its all about wearing your opponent down and out working him.

Put any MMA fighter in a ring with a boxer and they will be embarrassed. A boxer 2 weight classes lower would embarrass them.

No Boxer would ever get in an MMA fight (street fight) because legs are too important to Boxers and those are fair game in MMA. In a pure hand to hand combat a boxer would defeat an MMA fighter 90%+ of the time.

hand to hand combat? Maybe, but do you really think that any boxer could stand toe to toe with Anderson Silva while he throws kicks and punches?  No.

That is such an absurd argument.  You are talking about guys trained to take people to the ground and be on top so they have the upper hand. I would sure hope that in an MMA style fight the MMA fighter would win easily but the facts are there have been plenty of over the hill boxers who have turned to MMA, because it was easier, and many of them simply just knock the MMA guy out and thwart their attempts to take them to the ground.  I have yet to see an MMA fighter decide to jump to boxing.  The whole point of MMA is take the opponent to the ground and I am sorry but the last thing I want to see is two guys rolling on the ground strangling each other or throwing elbows.  This is just your typical street fight with a referee.  Now obviously these MMA guys are expertly trained and super athletic but when it comes down to which is a better sporting event boxing takes it easily.

What over the hill boxer do you know of that's running through MMA knocking people out?

I think there is more money in MMA which is why the boxers are leaving their sport. Wasn't Floyd Mayweather considering a move to MMA not too long ago? Boxing is pretty much dead now, other than Mayweather-Pacquiao there are no interesting fights that people want to see. I think Tyson was Boxing's last big harrah.

As for which sport is more damaging, I think MMA is more taxing on your overall body but Boxing is easily more damaging to your mental health just because of all the punches they take to the head.

"Merciless" Ray Mercer, 49 years old, had his first MMA fight last June against former UFC Champ Tim Sylvia and knocked him out in 9 seconds.  Boxers are leaving boxing when they are too old to be drawing the big fights because no boxing promoter in his right mind is going to let a 49 year old in the ring.  James Toney is trying to get into UFC but Dana White is trying to prevent it because he is scared of Toney's punching power.

Herschel Walker is becoming an MMA fighter for god's sake.  MMA will take anybody who is willing to fight for money.  You do not have to be talented just willing to get into the ring and fight somebody as if it were outside a bar.  This is not the case for boxing.

Tim Sylvia knocks himself out when he brushes his teeth. Ray Mercer knocked out one guy, and an absolute bum at that.

The boxers you speak of have fought no one of any merit and don't even fight in the UFC. Dana White is preventing it because he is not an MMA fighter and seems pointless to sign. I know Kimbo is no boxer but you cannot deny the power he has in his hands and he got trashed in MMA, Dana White only signed him because he is a ratings draw and once the Kimbo fascination was up so was his UFC contract.

MMA is a growing sport that is trying to be accepted my mainstream media and my guess is they try to get names like Herschel Walker because it makes people take a second glance at the headline and generates interest. This is my guess and that is my reasoning which makes sense in my head. It's just one of those things where they want to create as much buzz or news as possible because it's good for the sport overall. I doubt you will see any of these boxers fighting for a title ever.

Don't get me wrong, I respect boxing as a sport, but with the fighters nowadays I am just no longer interested in it.

I can understand if MMA is not interesting to some, that's fine but I find it ignorant that someone can say there is no real strategy behind it and that it's not a sport. If people truly understood the disciplines involved they would see all the strategy involved.

I agree that Ray Mercer and these other boxers turned MMA will never fight the elite talent in the sport because well they are not talented in MMA style fighting.  While Mercer knocked out a past his prime fighter he also lost to Kimbo Slice in an exhibition.  My whole point was that MMA will allow anybody, no matter what type of training, to get into the cage at some level.  I think there is strategy to MMA but believe there is more involved in boxing seeing as there is less of legal area to hit and hits can only be landed by two things, a left fist and a right fist.

So has covers member Pimpson.  I run into five people a day who claim they are MMA training.  Everybody and their grandmother are training for MMA.  Just because he has been training to do something does not mean he should be doing it.

That argument is a two way street. Yes there is a bigger area to strike an opponent but that also means there's a bigger area to protect yourself. So there is a bigger emphasis on defense and evasion in MMA. Guys like Lyoto Machida and Anderson Silva are great at this, which is why they have had such successful MMA careers.
