My frustration with the Canadian health care system

I took my grandpa 3 friday nights ago into our local hospital because he was complaining about pack pain that prevented him from standing up straight (he's 90 years old).

during week 1 they did a biopsy, mri, ctscan and a few xrays. Doctors came in that wednesday to tell us they found something on his back that may be cancerous, possibly a tumor. They are unsure so they'll wait for the tests to come in

week 2 - no update. Doctor came in that tuesday and told me he has an enlarged prostate (44mm), and that might be cancerous, but like everything else so far, still not sure. The test results should come in within a day or 2 (they put a "rush" order on it)

week 3 - nothing all week.....and today is Friday.

I understand that he's up there in age and thus might not be a priority. but fuck man! 3 fucking weeks? I feel like he's on his death bed  and the hospital/doctors are just letting him wither away. I talked to 2 of my doctor friends and they told me it usually never takes this long and we should seek care in the States. If he wasn't so old, I think that would be an option.

If i had told me it would take this long i would have dished out the $5000 and taken him over to buffalo new york to get it checked out.

Take him now. How many grandfathers do you have? I wish I had ever had one.

At 90 years old, chemo or surgery are not realistic possibilities. It would be good to know sooner though.

Look at it this way. He has been given 10,000 worth of medical service/tests etc. That doesn't sound so bad to me.

You'd be afraid to seek care in the states even with insurance.

You must be high... people around the world wish they had the health care we do.. It might be a bit slower but its great for the most part. My mom had a successful operation to remove kidney cancer 2 years ago. they found the growth while they were looking for something completely different. It wasn't a major issue so i'm assuming that if it was in the US, she probably doesn't even get it checked and who knows how things would have went

For things like cancer it actually is strange, Cancer care here in Canada is actually better than the USA in most instances, so something is wrong with paper work or it came back as a negative. 

Doctors are overpaid bookies.

Obama Care is completely different than what Canada has.

In the United States, doctors are more likely to do extra tests than in Canada.  Perhaps, more fear of lawsuits?  Canadian laws tend to protect doctors better.

In both US and Canada, wait time for treatment can vary depending on  hospital and location. 

Easy to agree with Thorpe that Obamacare is different from Canadian healthcare.  US has a long way to go to catch up to other countries.

 

Why's that? Plenty of 90 year olds have surgery. And one can run up $10k in a day or two in the hospital, that's nothing in medical bills.

And why would the OP be scared to seek US care (still the best in the world).

The guy is fucking 90.  Seriously?  Boo hoo hoo.  News flash.  People get old, they die.  Yes, it is sad, but grandma and grandpa die.  Nobody, none of us here, live forever.  There is no endless pot of money to take care of all these old, sick people.   You are shallow.  Celebrate his life.  But, for christs sake, the guy is NINTEY.  What little world are you living in?  I understand this is harsh, but part of living, is dying.  Get a helmet.

Two-Tier Health Care is the wrong way to go Madden.

Yeah thats good on him actually, fucking Canadians sometimes.

The one thing that might actually help the brain drain some of the doctors might actually want to stay if they could have a better clinic and a better paycheque.  I don't know how you would manage something like that you don't want the doctors in the lower tier system resenting their jobs.
