My niece is getting fat

My niece is temporarily living with me (one or two years tops) and she is just getting fatter and fatter by the day.  She's 18 years old and very sensitive to this topic but I'm worried she's gunna turn into a whale.  If she were my daughter I'd handle her a certain way but damn, there's some lines an uncle can't cross IMO and this I think is one of them ... or no?  She's freaking lazy, super dumb and has zero ambition in life.  It's very frusterating and very sad at the same time.  Somtimes she comes off as the *know it all* which just annoys the sh*t outta me.

slob, that i dunno but she's getting pretty big ... she's 5ft 7' .... if i tried to lift her up and put her on a scale i'd hurt my back.  if i post a link to her picture here and my sisters finds out, i'd get my neck slit.  i'll try n ask her tonight.

If she's staying with you for a 'year or two' treat her like you would your daughter. Have a woman talk to her about her weight, like her mom or your wife(?).

kapono, oh she's fat ... and getting fatter by the day.  Her lack of exercise, laziness and her *know it all* attitude will keep her this way.  I guess as an uncle there is only so much I can do.  Even if she were my daughter, what could I tell a 18 year old daughter anyways ... regarding her weight that is ... itz a lost cause ... its such a trajedy given her mother (my sister) is still an attractive lady and daughter is an absolutely slob

Stop stocking the refrigerator with bologna, hot dogs, cheeze whiz, and whatever the heck else is making her fat. Lock the pantry where the donuts, Doritos, and Twinkies are being stored. Stop feeding her crap and teach her to eat healthy.

If she's living with you then presumably you're sharing a refrigerator and meals?  What's in there and what are you serving at meals?

Do you have a good relationship with her?  Just be honest and tell her your concerned about her lifestyle.

Suggest weight watchers or her mom has to speak to her.  Intervention is the only hope that will work.  She will need to listen to someone and probably is not you.  Her peers or teacher or preacher or someone she respects.  It will require great effort and desire to meet her goals.

they have a special on HBO on the obesity of america, stop drinking any soda with sugar, stop eating white bread, pizza, anything with high fructose corn syrup, and freaking workout.

First things first. Tell your wife to stop bringing home foods that aren't helping. Then either you, your wife or the both of you need to sit down with her to have a heart to heart. Approach it from a concerned parents view with the goal being to getting her to make commitments. Explain to her that getting dates requires a certain self maintenance. 

Don't expect things to change immediately. Obesity is a disease, not a choice. Getting a Doctor involved might be necessary.

Becoming obese may be a disease, but staying obese is definitely a choice IMO
