i am in internet marketing and i should let you know on black Friday....the Friday after thanksgiving you will be able to buy a 40 inch LCD TV...i believe a Sharp brand for less than 300.00 plus tax...
So hold off if you haven't already bought a TV.

LED is really the way to go with Samsung leading the way in LED TV technology. The size of the screen is the choice you'll have to make. Good luck.
Actually, there are 5 kinds of HDTV's (I'll dismiss RP's because they are now obsolete although mine still works great).
1. DLP........they are not the rage anymore but are still a great value & produce an excellent picture. The cost of replacement bulbs has come way down which makes their long term value better than ever.
2. LCD........has it's +'s & -'s......works great in a bright room but doesn't have the ability to produce great blacks.
3. LED-LCD (currently being advertised as a LED tv)..........they use LED's to backlight an LCD tv which can, for the most part, help a LCD tv produce much better blacks. Samsung may have been the 1st to produce these but they are not the only ones now.
4. Plasma.........great picture.... deep, rich colors but some can suffer from a reflective screen..........very thin & can be hung on wall.
5. OLED.......... the future.......Sony has some now but they are very expensive. They are a true LED tv.
That's just the basics. The bottom line is there are a lot of choices to fit your budget & needs. All will give you a good/great HD experience but some may better fit your situation better than the others.

Yeah LED is probably the best, but if money is worth anything to you, you will probably get something a little less expensive.
Honestly, from everything I've seen, Samsung's hands down have the BRIGHTEST picture and i absolutely love mine. 42" is definitely big... absolutely big enough..... ..... .... but the 50" kicks its ass. That's a big 8 inches...

I wanted to get a Sony Bravia but then got a Toshiba 40 inch LED 1080p with a furniture deal. We are quite happy with it. My last TV was also a Toshiba, 32 inch regular TV. It is still working well and it is either 4 or 5 years old. Good luck. I think you will be happier with a 40" rather than a 32".
