Thorpe is referring to something like a traditional IRA, while I was referring to someone earlier in this thread mentioning tax free income from an investment like a Roth IRA
The point I am trying to make is that not only is the government less and less stable, unaccountable to the people it works for, and wasteful, it isn't without precedent that the gov. will offer incentives on programs and investments only to withdraw them later on

As far as the religion debate, here is my take. There has been a lot of pain, persecution, and death in the name of religion. Yet I think the world is a much better place because of religions (with the exception of a few of them), because to think there would not still be plenty of killing and raping if there was no religion is a mistake. There would be and have always been wars over bodies of water, resources, some king insulting some other king, etc. and there would be no moral compass to at least say it was wrong.
I don't think people are born knowing killing, stealing, and raping is bad, and without religion we wouldn't have such common and taken for granted philosophies such as thou shalt not kill and the golden rule and

I don't have a Roth IRA, so correct me if I am wrong, but that isn't tax free either. You pay taxes on the income that goes into the Roth, and it is tax free when you withdraw it...
The USA will always be able to borrow more money, and the sancitiy of contracts and private property is written into the constitution. It takes 3/4 of the states to change the constituion which probably won't happen in our lifetimes, so short of a military coup there isn't much to worry about IMO. I'd be more worried about runaway inflation making your savings worthless

Getting into semantics here, but technically a Traditional IRA is tax deductible or tax deferred, and a Roth is tax free which is what was brought up ("tax free")so that's what I was referring to. The important discrepancy with regards to my statement is that depending on the government keeping their word 40 years from now isn't as safe as a lot of people think considering exponential increases in gov. spending and waste.
Once again their are precedents for this. Social security income and unemployment benefits were supposed to be tax free until they decided to start taxing it
