What is it with releasing tax returns, this started in the 70's and I'm still trying to figure out what it has to do with selecting the best person for a particular office. I think jealousy of someone who will accomplish much more in life than you is the main reason.

Um not sure how to respond to this. Are you 12 or something? Do you really think that people want to see his tax returns out of jealousy??? Or perhaps it has more to do with seeing what his business interests are, who he owes money to, who owes him money, what countries he has business ties with etc... You know things that are related to conflicts of interest as the president of the US.
I would say that the fact that he is holding so firm is pretty fishy.

that political discussion is what we usually referred to as out of context. or the media spin on the actual event. deception or lies has many faces, out of context to lead to a false opinion is but one face of this many sided crystal.
Nature I agree with what you are saying. Almost everything can be interpreted or spun one way or another depending on your desired outcome. However, in this specific instance it does not apply.
Spicer did not take any questions from anyone. He gave a prepared talk to the audience. A talk in which he flat out lied. It is not like he was asked a hard hitting question that he was not prepared for and stumbled / panicked a little and misspoke. We all do that. But he had a prepared talk that he delivered. Meaning his lies were pre-mediated. that is very different than the scenarios you are painting.
I sort of wonder if it was a clever strategy by Trump to divert attention from the women's marches.

Nature -- another analogy is if I told you that today is Tuesday and you said it is actually Monday. Both of those answers can not be right. One of us is wrong. And it does not take some stealth detective work to get to the bottom of it.
That is what Spicer did. He flat out lied. And he lied about things that are so easily verifiable.

Not really. It is par for the course.
The main point of the thread is that it seems ironic how Trump and his team are so big on the fake news thing and dishonest media thing. But then go out and pitch the biggest example of those very things. If you are gonna be so aggressive and bully like against other people than probably best to avoid maybe the most egregious example of that very thing.
For what it is worth I have heard (not read anything yet or heard any news) that today Spicer has more or less explained his side and that he realizes what happened. I am not sure if this is true but that is what I have heard.

Snowflake: Short for "special snowflake," a pejorative for an entitled person. Most people protesting Trump are "snowflakes," according to the alt-right, as are anti-Trump celebrities and most liberals.

Releasing tax returns has nothing to do with jealousy of someone who will accomplish more in life.
FEC already requires candidates to release to disclose their finances. Half of congress enjoys millionaire status, study shows
The issue is their taxation rate, how much they paid, the loopholes, tax shelters. These people are elected to lead by example. Tax money is used to pay their salaries, benefits ..etc
FEC filing is not detailed enough .There were discrepancies between Romney's FEC filing and tax returns .
The voters also need to know where the economic interests of those who are supposed to represent them lie. Are they honest about their incomes, where it comes from. There may be conflict of interests ..etc
Gov. George Romney's (Mitt Romney's father) released 12 years of tax return in 1968. He stated that one year could be a fluke , done for show.
Donald Trump brags about not paying taxes "That makes me smart" but he wants to make the military great, give tax cuts to thw wealthy.
where will the government get the money for the military ?
