Vanzack, it sound like you might need a friend in Vegas in the future :-)
Anyways, my story is very similar to yours, I use to be a teacher but I made some nice money on the two homes in LA I purchased in '99 before things went crazy and sold at the height in '07. During that time I also earned my sports betting degree and decided to move to vegas a couple of years ago. I too have no debt, and have been able to more than double what I would have made in the classroom the last few years. It feels nice to deal with cash or accounts set up at sportsbooks. I can place bets on my phone with accounts at local casinos, too. But, the hardest thing in the world is to look at this as an investment over years and years and get through the daily grind.

I dont think I said "most", although it is a lot of what I do. But it is an income stream for me, and a method of diversification for me too. And that is all but gone.
The stock market IS gambling. It is not LIKE gambling, it IS gambling. So they are gamblers, just like me - and we are both taking advantage of the capitalist system.
We are living off of savings, and can do it for a decade if need be. But I wont last that long. I have a feeling that if in 3 years things arent better for gambling, I will go in to another form of business that meets my requirements.
where did you get your education? because you confuse these terms often, capitalism, socialism, georgism,,,,,,
our game here is a zero-sum game, we are not creating any wealth via production, and one man's gain is anothers loss. not capitalism
i wonder how much time you put into managing your money (not money management). I mean, you speak of savings a couple times, are you all cash? or cash equivalent? Does the devaluation of the currency not concern you at all?

What I am is my concern.
And to be honest, Im not really that concerned because I have learned that things like "devaluation of the currency" do not matter that much to me. It is all mental masturbation. If you choose to get worked up about things you cant control, that is a decision you make. I choose to worry about things I can control, and to be honest - money isnt so high on my list of importance.
I have had a lot of money, and I have had no money - and to be honest - the difference isnt so great. I am more concerned about my family, my relationships, impact to society, and overall well-being. Money is nice, but you seem obsessed and militant - I just choose not to be that involved. I choose to be bored when instead.

it's actually not mental masturbation at all. i think you might be confusing the terms currency and money. i would think someone in your situation that spends so much time (just to make money) would want to keep an eye on what's going on with their chosen 'store of value' for their bankroll
but hey, that's just me
my ears always perk up when someone has to remind me that they are 'being honest', as you said three times in four sentences "and to be honest". i believe you, what reason do you have to lie? plenty of people wallow in their own ignorance, willfully. I've wondered how much it's even the individuals fault. I mean, we are bombarded with so much information (probably more bad then good), how does one disseminate between the good and the bad?

You got me. I am lying. It is not just that I am writing extemporaneously (sp?) very fast.
Im not confusing anyting. I think you have a problem with accepting that other people might have a differnt viewpoint than you, and a logical explanation is not relevant. I understand the terms money and currency - and neither of them are high on my priority list to worry about. For you? great. Not for me. I dont spend time on it, not productive. So you dont have to explain someone who takes a different approach than you through a "he must not understand..." type of missive.
I understand. I just choose to prioritize what I concentrate on, and the devaluation of currency is not in my top 1000. You have my proxy on this one to carry on worrying. I will live my life.

don't get all defensive now van, i am not attacking you, just asked some questions, and you are always open to answering them,,,,,,
I dont spend time on it, not productive.
hey, to each their own, who am i to tell you what productive is for yourself. I mean, you might feel that bashing Christianity back to the dark ages for days on end is productive, i might think that protecting the little savings i do have to be worth a couple minutes of my day. it's your time, spend it as you see best fit
and i agree with you fully, money takes a back seat to everything else that is important in life. have a good 4th weekend

What I meant was its not like you can buy the Bulls -7 and add it to your portfolio and see what it does over the next few months, its more like day trading with no plans on holding a stock, just trying to turn a marginal profit.
Must be nice to have a million or more it in the bank, but with low interset rates and the price of every thing else rising, not having any income would not sit well with me ( definately not for 3 years). I assume your house is paid for and just have minimal household bills and a car payment or 2?
It's a distinction without a difference. In both instances, you are making a play based on what you think the outcome will be. One might happen sooner than the other, but it's still the same thing.
You're either gambling that the Bulls will win by (or less) than 7 or gambling that your stock will go up in value. Both are still gambles.
I have a buddy that manages my money and I've held stocks for days.......months....and sometimes over a year. Makes no difference.

Van...You're like most of us degenerates...Tho as you've learned w/ wisdom learning to just lay off is probably as important as making the bet
I will still0 make a dumb bet or 2, but I'm most proud of myself not betting 30 spreads/totals a day and sticking to under 7 or whatever I really like...Granted I'm no pro and laying 5g is out of my thought/concept, but I have also learned to say NO FUCKING WAY
